The kit includes a Parent Handbook, five Red Ditty Books (these are ideal for practicing reading simple words and sentences), a Handwriting Workbook, a reading chart and stickers, plus two small books of ‘First Words’ and ‘More Words.’ In effect, these are like double sided word cards. The whole set is extremely colourful (all the Ditty books are in colour, as well as everything else that is included), the chart and stickers are good fun and this is a wonderful set to help children improve their reading, phonics and early writing.
This is where this kit comes in to give the right kind of guidance and I can see letters being written up and advising parents to the relevant colour kit for their child's development stages as we speak.
This kit is a continuation from set one which is concerned with the initial phases of phonics where children are maturing the association of sounds with phonemes and graphemes. This set assumes knowledge and comfortable demonstration of most if not all of the graphemes and associated phonemes as 'speed sounds' and has started blending 3 speed sounds together to decode simple words such as c-a-t --> cat.
Thus this set is about extending that practice to include more digraphs 'sh' 'th' etc and to use the blending skills to decode basic stories 'called ditties' of which are 4 per book with about 20 words per ditty and by virtue of chosen words rhyme.
The set includes 2 flip books to practice blending basic words starting from 'cat' up to 'skip', the 5 ditty books are a bit better than the Roger Red Hat et al of my learning to read era (which I hated as I already read competently) but after the first 10 readings may grate despite the Blake-esque illustrations by Tim Archbold.
To encourage reading of the said ditties and books there is a progress chart with stickers! Bribery gets you everywhere, just don't let a younger sticker ad child near them unless under supervision as you only get the one per ditty.
In addition there is a handwriting book which includes a lot of reverse decoding and early spelling practice with things like - - t and an arrow pointing to a child with a fishing net, lots of CVC words, starting with one letter missing working up to filling gaps in very short sentences with visual clues with the last in the book being 'I lick my ---- and rub my ----' which is about being happy after eating junk food not anything rude.
I can see this book being used as part of reinforcement practice at home and even homework practice to help support phonics development from home. My daughter is a bit young for this set, but after looking through with her expressing an interest in the flip books and ditties I'm certainly now looking to purchase the first set so she can build towards this in her own time.
