From AC Macklin's opening short we are taken by the hand through a world of hidden terrors. With survival anxiety as a natural baseline the myriad authors reveal a world destroyed by the horrors of today, where hidden knowledge is a very real and valuable commodity.
There is a very British feel to this collection, despite its international setting. There is something of the BBC's Doctor in the idea of the Curator and a subtle feel of eldritch horror that takes me back to the hauntological works of Nigel Kneale or JG Ballard.
Each author brings something new to this shared world, leaving the reader with just enough answers to demand more questions be dealt with.
What is interesting about this anthology is the combination of very disparate writing styles and the inclusion of illustration with each story. Andrea Cradduck's imagery adds to the mixed feelings of isolation and potential salvation as you jump from each desolate scenario to the next.
I hear that AC Macklin plans a second anthology and I for one would encourage the author to follow up on that idea.
