Learn Spanish as you explore the colorful and diverse world of Latino culture

Build a rich Spanish vocabulary without the burden of boring repetition or tedious memorization with Read & Think Spanish, CD Edition. In this audio package, you will find more than 100 intriguing articles written in Spanish about the enchanting diversity of Latino culture--from Spain's rowdy La Tomatina festival and Argentina's passionate tango tradition to Celia Cruz, Cuba's beloved salsa singer.

Each article presents new vocabulary in boldface within the article; in the margins, you will find the translations. You'll know right away any words unfamiliar to you. On the CD, native speakers read aloud many of the articles contained in the book, so not only can you see how words are used on paper but how they sound in conversation.

With Read & Think Spanish, CD Edition, you will:

  • Grasp Spanish vocabulary quickly and easily with the help of English translations
  • Review and reinforce your newly acquired knowledge with end-of-chapter questions as well as exercises on the audio CD

As a concept this book is fantastic. 200 pages of articles in Spanish on interesting subjects, written in normal spanish. The secret is that the obvious vocabulary words (i.e phrases and specialist words) are highlighted and sequentially written down the side of the page. Therefore you don't have to tediously keep looking through a dictionary.

Thus you can either try to translate everything, or just get the jist. I would recommend for an intermediate stage in learning.

this book is great value, if you have some spanish this book will realy help, but if you are just begining then this book will be of no use to you, the stories in the book are a great way to learn the language and will give you a head start with conversations on any way of life in Spain and south america.

I bought this book as I am learning spanish and wanted to try as many different ways as possible. Along with classes and working through a couple of spanish textbooks, this is quite a fun and unintimidating method of learning. I would not call myself a total beginner, but do think that this is perhaps a little too much if you have no previous spanish knowledge.

Onto the 'but ................'. Living in Spain, I want something that is based on spanish for Spain and not spanish for South America. My spanish friend has looked at this and commented that there are many phrases / words that are not normal for Spain. The book has some articles about Spain, but the majority are about South American countries. This is why I scored it 4, I would like to have something in the same vein for the European market and not the American one.

This book, with accompanying cd, is really great for helping to understand Spanish as it is being spoken. The book is made up of different articles, on a cultural or historical theme, that you can read whilst listening to the cd. As a further help, each article also has a translation of vocabulary at the side of each page. This is one of the clearest, most concise and helpful Spanish books I have bought, and it is also good value.

I am learning Spanish by self-study and this is the best reader by far that I have come across. With translations on the same page, I can follow whole sentences easily, without losing the thread when I have to reach for the dictionary.I hope that further volumes will follow.

A small group of friends living in Spain we are trying to improve our Spanish beyond Intermediate and have found this book not only very helpful but enjoyable too, especially as we are learning more about Spanish customs at the same time. Not having to delve into a dictionary all the time was also very good. We would recommend this book to anyone trying to take their Spanish to another level.

The concept of this book is great and something I'd searched fruitlessly for for years. The book is full of short (one or two pages) interesting texts on different cultural aspects of the Spanish speaking world. Many of the texts have an accompanying audio track so you can listen/read along. Meanwhile, expressions or words considered most difficult or useful are emboldened and their English translation is given in the margin - saves time otherwise spent in the dictionary paining over the meaning in context. I love the fact you can dip in and out of the book.

It is probably most useful for intermediate students, although other learners can benefit in different ways.

There was no consistency in terms of which key words were chosen - so some things were highlighted several times, while some difficult words were not translated at all. Also, I was initially disappointed that not all texts had an audio track. However, these were minor gripes massively outweighed by the pluses.

I think the concept behind this book is good. To have interesting articles written in Spanish with the less familiar words translated into English (together with the root of the verb) makes learning Spanish more interesting.

I'm trying to learn Spanish at the moment and have bought and listened to the first Michel Thomas CD course. Armed with just this knowledge I was able to understand a lot of the articles in this book, so it's probably fine for anyone just above beginner level.

The downside is that with no accompanying CD to give guidance on pronunciation, I don't think it isn't going to help me as much in verbal communications. However, I believe that there's a version with a CD so I would recommend that anyone who is interested should buy that one rather than this. (I'm kicking myself I didn't go for the book and CD, to be honest.)
