An interesting and varied collection of stories for children. In a collection by several different writers it's unlikely that anyone will like every story, but equally unlikely that someone won't find something (in this collection) to enjoy.
I've given four stars rather than five because of a few minor grammatical errors - I consider it especially important to avoid such errors in a book for children who may just be learning to read. Examples include:
lead being used as the past tense of lead (a common mistake - it's actually led)
"The colonel may well have perished that day" - we knew the colonel was alive, so it should read "might have"
a reference to penguins living in the Artic - wrong on two counts. The word is arctic, and penguins don't live there! They live in the southern hemisphere.
My final criticism concerns the story "Sugar on Snow". Writers are advised "Show, don't tell". There is a sentence in this story "Hickory, birch, oak or maple keep an even heat". Not only is the reader being told rather than shown, (s)he is being taken out of the story to be told.
Despite these criticisms, I recommend this book to parents looking for an interesting selection of short stories for their children.
