If you dont 'need' a dedicated GPU system, then I would say this is the best laptop on the market under $2k.
+ Extremely high build quality. Strong and light.
+ Very fast (highly recommend i7 8th gen quad core cpu)
+ Although no dedicated graphics, the 16gig ram and 8th gen i7 intel graphics can handle light to moderate gaming pretty well.
- No dedicated GPU. But then, what 13' laptop does? (except the new surfacebook).
- Runs hot. This is expected from a quad core ultra thin machine. The all metal body helps transfer heat away from the components (right into your legs).
- Lack of upgradable RAM. I would imagine this is another factor in how it can be so portable, but this is my only legitimate concern. In 2017, using up 16gig of ram with an ultrabook probably means you just need a bigger system but what will be the 'standard' RAM in 2020?
Carefull: DONT ORDER FROM Coryell Solutions (USA) - they only give you US-LAYOUT.
I'd order from Amazon directly, there you get the verified and original UK-Layout.
1- Small secondary symbols (&*>!"£$ ...) on the keys are not backlit (photo attached): This might not look a big issue; but if you are used to keyboard back lighting, it can be quite a big issue, especially in darker environment.
2- Coil whine: I still haven't figured out when it happens. It seems random or maybe when the actual fan wants to turn off. Actual fan noise is not annoying as it is the normal sign of CPU being under heavy load. But the coil whine can be annoying/worrying. The only good thing is that it takes almost short, 5-6 seconds.
Because of above two issues I MAY return the laptop, request a refund and go for Dell XPS 13 touchscreen which has identical configs, price, and full-key backlit, although I'm not sure about its coil whine problem.
Before I bought this I tested out all of the other major Ultrabooks (Macbook air and pro, Surface Laptop, HP 360spectre, Lenovo x1 carbon, Dell XPS13, ASUS Zenbook3). I bought this for work which includes 3D image rendering of 6GB image files and general medical research.
Summary: Overall 4.5 / 5 Stars
Pros: Excellent build quality, Fantastic screen colour gamut and resolution, reduced bezel screen size is great, Chroma keyboard, Precise and smooth trackpad, extensive ports and future proofing with thunderbolt C, potential link with razer core for high performance gaming, virtually silent fan noise and excellent heat levels, Razer Customer service, Value for money (These specs for £1500 are hard to come by elsewhere - the 265gb version is £1350). Handling- all Ultrabooks are light but when closed this is extremely lightweight and portable. I can easily carry it in one hand open or closed.
Cons: Screen glare! - Max screen brightness is too low for outdoor work in sunny areas, Touchscreen is excellent as a basic touchscreen but no pressure sensitivity detection or palm rejection so unable to undertake writing or drawing tasks easily, Low key travel on keyboard (some people may hate this), fingerprints will mark the surface (can get skins to remove this problem).
Who should NOT buy?: Anyone doing outdoors work in the sun (screen glare), anyone who wants to take notes on touchscreen or make detailed drawings and anyone who needs a very long battery life.
Who SHOULD buy one?: Anyone else looking for a solid ultrabook with future proofing and potential for a high performance gaming laptop with the razer core.
I ordered this directly from Razer Store online selecting UK. They quoted shipping would take 3-5 days, and it arrived within 4 days. It is dispatched from their factory in Hong Kong and delivered by air mail. I initially had a problem with my order but 1 email to customer service and they replied within 24 hours and easily resolved the problem.
Build: Out of the box it is fantastic. Excellent build quality, feeling both light and strong. I had gone to a multi-store (John Lewis) and tested virtually all of the other ultrabooks and this was definitely one of the best in terms of build quality. The Hinge is sturdy but not too stiff, and will allow the screen to hold in any angle. Touchscreen panel is excellent and feels high quality. The only problem is that fingerprints will mark the entire laptop easily. I got around this by getting a skin from Dbrands (highly recommended).
Keyboard: Chroma is fantastic and the light-show is initially very impressive, but I quickly forgot about it the more I used it, so I wouldn't recommend buying purely for the lights. No backlit secondary functions though!!! You either have to strain your eyes or memorise their positions. This applies to all keys not just the function ones (e.g. "question mark, ?" is not lit up). Key travel is rather shallow but it has a firm and comfortable end plate and recoil. It feels very similar to the HP 360Spectre in terms of recoil and travel (even though the spectre should have more?). The Microsoft Surface laptop and dell xps13 had far more key travel in my opinion, with the Surface being the most comfortable. However, it is easy to type and I got used to it within a day.
Screen: Colour and resolution is fantastic and exactly as advertised. Major issue though is the screen brightness which is too dim when working outside or even near a window. The glare can be quite strong so you may have to adjust the angle of the screen quite a bit. I would not recommend this if you are working outside in very sunny conditions. For inside though - brightness is fine.
Touchscreen: Very accurate for a basic touchscreen. Does NOT have pressure sensitivity or palm rejection software so you cannot use this for taking notes in class etc. However, It works very well with a fibre-tip stylus as I have been able to exert pressure to draw and write fluently, whilst not scratching the screen. If you exert decent/constant pressure it will allow you to do certain drawings, however, if you need to do detailed artwork or take touchscreen notes I wouldn't recommend this. (I would recommend the surface laptop - the best drawing touchscreen hands down for me. HP Spectre360 is 2nd).
Sound: Comes from two side speakers and is decent but not amazing. Bass is better than I thought but not as good as the macbook's. Volume maximum is impressive and it can be very very loud.
Trackpad: Made from glass and is fantastic. I have a cover skin from "Dbrand" and despite this it is incredibly accurate and sensitive. Button press feels satisfying and the base trackpad is the one area fingerprints won't stick!
Fans and heat: I haven't played games, but in idle the fans are virtually silent. I have had no problems with heating with videos/movies, work using excel and 3D image rendering using image J (It got hot but nothing unexpected).
Ports: 1 Thunderbolt USB Type C port, 2x USB 3 ports, 1 HDMI port, 1 Headphone jack, 1 USB type A 2.0. All ports are well built and have solid connections.
Battery and power: Comes with the 45W adapter. Has a fast charging service which took my machine 17 minutes from 68% to full. Battery life is possibly a problem. Given the glare issue I have to have brightness at 100% most of the time so I get around 5 hours of battery life. Battery saving mode takes it to 7hrs but any demanding performance will drop it to 3hrs.
Overall: I would give it 4.5/5 if I could. It is an excellent machine which has some drawbacks but apart from the brightness these are more to do with user need than the machine itself.
