About the Author

Jordan Ifueko is a Nigerian American writer who grew up eating fried plantains while reading comic books under a blanket fort. She now lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their collection of Black Panther Funko Pops. Raybearer is her debut novel.

Oh my gawd what a breathe of fresh air and a 'ray' of sunshine this was <----- see what I did there?!

Anyway I'll stop with that and just get down to it!

Tarisai was born and bought up with a purpose, train, join the Crown Prince's Council....and then kill him. But there is more at work here than being that simple and as it unwound I was speechless!

'My adventure had confirmed their most sinister suspicions. My mother was the devil, and I, her puppet demon.'

I'm not really going to say much, well nothing, about the plot because anymore than what you know already will spoil it....so characters....

Tarisai, oh jeez I just wanted to give her a full on Mumma cuddle (that my son won't allow anymore, damn those pre teen years!)

The Crown Prince, Dayo was so loveable but I did find him a bit of a drip in some places.

Jeet and Kirah were the ones that stood out for me and stole my heart. You have the fierce friend in Kirah, always standing by Tarisai's side and then the scary Jeet who was actually a softy (well for Tarisai and Dayo anyway!)

'I’m so happy you’re in my story, Kirah. And I’m happy you’re in mine.'

This book has it all, Revenge, betrayal, bonds, love and twists. It reminded me of the saying, family are the friends you choose. Oh and BTW that ending had my jaw dropping!

Okay so I saw this book getting hyped up all over the hot key book social media accounts so I knew I just had to read it, as it is a fantasy set in an African inspired world so I knew I would love it.

It is about a young girl who grows up secluded from the world by mother & is raised by a group of tutors with no one for friends besides herself, she is then tasked to go the royal palace & try to win over the prince to become one of his council & when she does she is then tasked to kill him.

The characters are whole & filled to the brim with different personalities, I love that they all have different dynamics between each other & it is not your typical enemies to lovers book as I am bored of those.

I can’t wait for the next books in series as I know it will an amazing journey with even more character growth, so if you’re not sure if you should buy this I say do it!

Really enjoyed this book - was recommended it by a friend and was uncertain at the start. As soon as I got used to the terminology and characters I was completely sucked in. Loved the concept, imagery, setting and the twists and turns of the plot. I hope there is a sequel in progress!

An Exquisite & Richly-Imagined West African-Inspired Debut Fantasy

Raybearer is the opening instalment in an exciting West African-inspired young adult fantasy duology complete with lush scenery and a richly imagined plot. Set against the backdrop of the fictional empire of Aritsar, a group of children are handpicked to be raised in isolation with the future emperor, and groomed to someday rule the empire. Amongst these children is Tarisai, a love-starved black prodigy who is compelled to compete to join the Crown Prince's Council of 11. If picked, she will be bonded to the Council, a promise that is irresistible to her. Raised in solitude by a mother who was barely there to care for her, Tarisai wants nothing more than to belong and to satisfy her longing for a family environment; both of these desires are fulfilled when she becomes one of the 11. She soon realises she has come to love both the prince and the family she has found within the palace walls. However, her mother has other plans for her; she wants Tarisai to betray Crown Prince Deyo and murder him when he least expects but Tarisai is conflicted between wanting to gain the approval of her mother and remaining loyal to the people and place she has come to adore.

This is a mesmerising, vibrant and fresh feeling Afrofantasy novel which is infused with West African tradition and mythologies. I found the prose dazzling and compelling from the get-go and the worldbuilding was some of the most engaging and accomplished I've ever seen; time and effort have been given to craft intricate details of this sprawling world and the descriptions are so vivid and immersive you feel as though you are actually there. It's a complex, multilayered tale of magic, mystery and adventure but it also explores the important topics of imperialism, colonialism, family, mother-daughter relationships, friendship, poverty, love, sacrifice, loyalty, morality, fate, faith, power, individuality and misogyny. The characters are so beautifully wrought that they come alive and effortlessly jump off the page and into your heart; Tarisai is a strong female protagonist whose inner turmoil is illustrated in a sincere fashion; she is fierce in her role and grows in a natural way throughout the novel. I honestly am flabbergasted that this is a debut as it is incredible and I can see it winning awards.

Above all, this story reminds you that even through adversity you can flourish with the love of good people, that you must fight for what you believe in and the importance of learning to trust yourself. Many thanks to Hot Key Books for an ARC.
