Sometimes good things can slip past us without warning.
The Bird and The Bee's second album 'Ray Guns Are Not
Just The Future' is one such thing. Released early last
year it would not as yet appear to have had any significant
or lasting impact on the listening world.

This is a shame. It is an album which deserves to be heard widely.

Band members Greg Kurstin and Inara George hail from
Los Angeles where I can well imagine their delightfully
mixed-up musical confections finding both a home and an eager
audience in the livelier corners of West Hollywood.

The twelve compositions and two interludes in this collection
are an enormously varied and consistently entertaining bunch.

A bit "easy-listening" here ('Diamond Dave'); a bit upbeat
but gentle electro-poppy there ('My Love') but always with
a smile and a big dollop of charm. Charm is the key to their door!
If you like Pink Martini chances are you'll like these guys too.

There really are some well-written songs here.
'Baby' is a particular favorite. A touching tale
mixing memory and pathos with a melody and harmonies
so good they spin and turn in the sky like fireworks.

'Witch' shows off Ms George's alluring voice in a
composition which would not sound out of place as
the theme tune for a new James Bond movie. Sultry,
seductive and a tad camp in the nicest possible way.

The retro references are managed with a light touch
and serve the present well in songs like 'You're A Cad'
and 'Ray Gun', both good examples of dislocated 60's
late-night cabaret shenanigans. The spirit of The
Swingle Singers is alive and well in the latter!

Lowell George's little girl and producer Greg Kurstin return with another tasty slice of retro/jazz/dance/lounge/pop, or whatever you care to call it. So seamless is the transition from their stunning 2007 debut that you are left wondering whether some of these tracks were perhaps left over from those original sessions, to finally find a home here.

George's exquisite multi-layered vocals once again combine perfectly with Kurstin's crisp and sparkly arrangements on another batch of offbeat and quirky offerings. That the overall effect isn't quite as stunning as their first outing is probably down to, on the one hand, familiarity this time round with their distinctive style and also the absence of anything quite as shockingly addictive as 'F**king Boyfriend" or as gloriously divine as "My Fair Lady", but tracks such as "Witch" "My Love" "Meteor" and "You're A Cad" all hit the spot.

"Sailin' Shoes" it isn't, but you feel that daddy would nevertheless have approved.

Was just checking out their new Hall and Oates cover album and thought I would swing by here and give this 5 stars. Loved the first album, love this. Quirky, charming, melodic, chilled and a real undiscovered gem... I would guess for most people. It doesn't hurt that she is as cute as a button and he looks like he is just bringing down a tray of freshly mixed margaritas to the swinging pool party. Great stuff that deserves a bigger audience.

Another collection of quirky lyrics and musical arrangements set off by Inara's beautiful clear voice.
Can't stop playing it.
