The writing echoes the protagonist's state of mind as we accompany him on a journey of discovery, both of personal strengths and the powers of darkness; manifest and gathered in the little village of Ravenswing. Harking back with deft touches of Hammer for some moments, abetted by moments of real depth that come across as unforced amidst the mayhem. This book delivers action and 'spills' aplenty, whilst weaving motivations and explanations into a whole by the end of the book.
I didn't think I'd enjoy this, but it just drew me along until curiousity was replaced by sympathy for the main character, which locked me in to reading the whole thing in one sitting. All-in-all, a fine debut.
