The world-famous Tower Bridge in London does not carry it’s name from the two large 65m (213ft) high towers, but because of the Tower of London standing on it‘s north bank. Due to increasing traffic in 1876, a special competition was started. Plans for a bridge were drawn up to extend over the Thames. The challenge was not to block the highly traveled shipping route. Until that point there wasn’t a bridge to the east of London Bridge. The building of the Tower Bridge began 1886 and lasted 8 years. In order to be able to build the 244 m (800 ft) long bridge, 432 workers were used to anchor the two 70,000 ton pillars into the river bed, in order to stabilze the bridge. At the time of it’s construction, the Tower Bridge was the largest and most complicated drawbridge ever built. The two 40m (131ft) long Bascules were originally operated hydraulically by steam power. In 1976 that was replaced with oil and electricity. Even if the bridge only opens a 1000 times a year now, the ships have priority over the street traffic.

The puzzle when up looks really good too although I'd say be prepared for how big it is. The measurements on Amazon don;t make much sense and I'd suggest this is about 30cm high and 90cm long when complete so really it needs dismantling quite soon after it has been put up.
A good 3D puzzle though. I'll probably buy more 3D puzzles for her from the range.
It arrived in excellent condition.
My only comment is that I didn't expect it to be as big once finished - Its large so bear this in mind when considering what to do with it once complete unless its going back in the box
I would say that if you want to build a model of Tower Bridge - buy a model of Tower Bridge. If you want to do a puzzle, buy a puzzle. I don't think the two work together very well.

My niece loved it. You do need quite a bit of space to keep it once it's built. Think it's about a metre long.Published 3 months ago by Miss Helen Warner
