What can i say about this book that will do it justice? It really needs to be read (aloud) to be appreciated, (not an overstatement!)

This is a fantastic storybook for children, boys and girls alike, made irresistible by the quirky, cute illustrations and the beautifully written ryhmes.

As a children's librarian in a large library I am familiar with all the new storybooks for children. It is my responsibility to co-ordiante and run children's storytime sessions, and this book is always a favourite. Children's enjoyment of this book tends to increase the more familiar they become with the characters and ryhmes, from the mouse, cow and whale, to the adorable ravenous beast himself.

I would only recommend this book for children over the age of three (although under three's may enjoy the pictures), as there are over thirty pages. Each page, though, has a rhyme about a VERY hungry animal listing the many unusual and wonderful things they could eat (because they are SO hungry!!)

This book would make a fantastic bedtime story, and is a great book for a child to keep and treasure over time, proving charming, captivating and humourous for both children and adults alike!!!

A colourful fun book, great illustrations....my 4 year old loves it. The ravenous beast is HUNGRY; HUNGRY, HUNGRY.... but the other animals claim to be even hungrier. My son is swept along with the story shouting HUNGRY!!!! as we go.
Would recommend this book for all kids aged 3 to 6.

My son has never tired of this book.Niamh Sharkey's art work is very appealing to a young child and the different meals that each animal consumes are fantastical to us but make perfect sense to a 3 year old. It's a great read for stimulating a childs imagination and I can whole heartedly recommend this book...enjoy.

Got this as my grandson had seen an advert for it at the back of another book and asked for it and as I'm a big softie gave in! Lovely pictures, great rhymes, but as a bit of a connoisseur of kids books I wouldn't put it up there in my top 10.

I bought this book several years ago for my daughter and she loved it. Now I am reading it all over again to my son who has asked for it every night for the last month.

It has fantastic use of repetition (especially hungry!) and language, lots of different words to describe eating, lots of fabulous describing words.

Starting with the mouse and ending up with the whale it teaches children about animals, colours, new vocabulary and language. As the animal gets bigger so does their food wish list so the ravenous beast claims to be so hungry that he could eat a house, the mouse claims to be able to eat a boat and a bell, next the cat claims to be able to eat a bucket and spade and some red lemonade.

Each item has to be found on the page which adds a fun interactive element to the story.

The tension builds throughout the book with each animal trying to outdo the others, each previous animal appearing under the next for the next page. Finally at the end there is a big release of tension, lots of excitement and the ravenous beast is on his own again.

My boy has loved this book since he was about two, but my daughter loved it until she was five and still sneaks in occasionally to hear it read.
This is one of the most requested, most loved and most enjoyed of all the books we have bought the kids, by children and adults alike.

A child's story with a slightly sinister twist (the ravenous beast eats lots of other hungry animals, but in a very off-camera and not upsetting way). Ideal to be read aloud: lots of different characters allows lots of different voices to be used. Illustrations are uncluttered and allow our little one to tell the story without being able to read the words.
