I really wanted to enjoy this book and to learn more about the 'real' Raquel. From seeing her interviewed over the years my impression of Miss Welch was always that of a fun but not terribly bright lady constantly flaunting her figure while claiming to be more than just an empty-headed clothes horse. Sadly, despite her oft stated claims of being a multifaceted, politically aware and grounded person, in her book she comes across as being obsessed with appearance, appearance, appearance. The few pages in which she shares anecdotes about her career are genuinely interesting, but they are few and very far between in a tome which often reads more like a prolonged advertisement for her wig range than anything else. ("Wigs in my collection, both those that are 100% human hair and those that are synthetic, are priced at a fraction of the cost of custom-made wigs, and this season we offer cutting edge new lace front construction", page 130). She also constantly refers to her own beauty, her "near perfect body" etc. seemingly without an awareness of how conceited this sounds. Of course Raquel was and is truly gorgeous, but a little modesty would not go amiss. It is a shame that she lacks the wit and self deprecation of someone like Joan Collins, an equally beautiful lady who can write about herself with humour and without coming across as a narcissist. And oddly, there is a scant and rather poor selection of photographs, although the back cover is rather revealing... Raquel in her office, surrounded by photographs of herself, and with brochures for her wig collection prominently on show!

Who would have guessed that Raquel Welch was a woman of the day? A woman who is not afraid to speak her mind, but one who does not step with the masses. She has a 'thing' about the sexuality of today, but she is not a prude. She believes that women should be feminine and that is her right, she has earned it.

Most of us know Raquel as the sex symbol and actress, and that is how her career was born. She wanted to be a serious actress, but her beauty got in the way. She never really accepted that, but she did learn to stand for her rights. She was never in a nude scene and her career may have suffered for that, at least that is what her agents told her. Raquel lived in California most of her life and married at a young age. She had two children and she says that first marriage was the best of her four. At some point the marriage went awry, and Raquel went to Hollywood and starred in her first film. The famous scene of Raquel in a tattered bikini of sorts chasing prehistoric monsters. She moved on to 47 films and had a wonderful career. Her two children were left with nannies, and it took time for Raquel to make that up to her children. It was not until she was in her later years that they became a close family. She has friends and family and if a man comes into her life that will be OK, but she is not out looking.

Raquel gives us a of minefield of beauty information that is quite helpful. Eye and face pads that help with wrinkles. Skin care dos and don'ts, and the regime that she uses every day to maintain her youthful skin and appearance. She talks about clothes and dating and looking your age. Raquel is into healthy eating and exercise, she has been her entire life.

I bought this for my partner who didn't enjoy it as it was full of tips on make up etc which I didn't realise. He didn't like it, but I haven't read it myself. He likes to read about film stars and their lives.

All the contents and subjects of this book is just what I wanted to know but even more in terms of how to be a lady. She's real feminine; I find a lot in common with her in many aspects though I'm no famous person/actress. But throughout life in general, I see a lot of myself in her. She's the epitome of womanhood. I so agree with her on most things. Women today should read this book. It's a must on how to be a fascinating, sexy, yet traditional in her nature (yes, traditional, but life's thrown you in a complicated and fast world where u get swept off and becoming addicted to of which I too experienced and am still experiencing so I do truly understand her)...but a very exciting life nonetheless, beyond dreams. Great book!! Thank you for sharing it with us. The tips, experiences, perspectives etc. How about a book on men in your life - without naming names. In my little world, I too live the way you do or have been living the way you have been. And it's just brilliant and wonderful.

Misunderstood that this is a 'how to' book and not Raquel putting forward the case to be taken seriously. Rather drab looking with low quality illustrations.
