About the Author

Joan Osborn, born in Bromley in 1929, is affectionately known as “Bear” by her close friends and family. She grew up on the same street as her future husband "Bert" and they were childhood friends. During the Second World War, Bert served in the RAF as an aircraft fitter and Joan being that much younger, spent a lot of her school days as an evacuee in North Wales dodging the doodle bugs and bombs dropping in her home town. After the war she worked at Summerset House as a secretary to a number of prominent people. In 1970 the whole family moved to Broadstairs in Kent where Joan ran a small guest house whilst Bert commuted to London every night working as a proof reader in the print trade.    In Joan’s hay day she was a keen and competent golfer, artist, potter, poet, guest house keeper, foster parent, wife and a full time mum to four children. Now that her husband has passed away, Joan keeps herself busy with her growing family and her beloved garden. Feeding the birds in her garden costs her more than feeding herself!
