Praise for Lori Duron's "Raising My Rainbow"

"A powerful book at the right time."
--Andy Cohen, author of "Most Talkative: Stories from the Front Lines of Pop Culture"

"It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a gender creative parent to create a gender creative child. Lori Duron is just one of those parents, and "Raising My Rainbow" is a must-read for the entire village. Beautifully written, humorous, and deeply open and self-reflective, this book, the first of its kind, gives us a window into a mother's joys, pain, and courage raising a child who goes against the binary gender grain of our society. This is not only an outstanding book, it is a big step forward in making it a better world for all of us.
--Diane Ehrensaft, Author of "Gender Born, Gender Made"

"I fell in love with this. Lori Duron has written a very important book, and as an author she is extremely generous in sharing the story of her family and in particular her own journey which made her realize that her job regarding her son is to 'not change him but to love him'. Duron and her husband and oldest son beautifully rise to every challenge C.J.'s gender creativity presents to them. As a reader, I felt privileged to witness their journey."
--Leslea Newman, author "The Boy Who Cried Fabulous, Heather Has Two Mommies, "and" October Mourning"

"Laugh-out-loud funny, tug-at-the-heartstrings moving, and thoroughly thought provoking, "Raising My Rainbow" is a must-read for anyone who has ever worried that their child--or a child that they know--might be perceived as 'different from' or 'other than.'"
--Jody M. Huckaby, Executive Director, PFLAG National

"First drawn to Lori's work as an educator and LGBT activist, it was my role as a father that provided the most poignant critical lens for Raising My Rainbow. While nobody has a blueprint for parenting, Lori's compassionate, insightful, and yes, humorous take of raising a "gender creative" child should be required reading for anyone bringing up or working with children."

We have our own CJ in this house and we too have an older brother who is male to the core. Our oldest has suffered too in the same way as Chase - this book could have been about our life. It is hugely wonderful to know that other families have experienced the same thing. Interestingly the book prompted me to talk to my son about how he feels about being girly and it brought all sorts of worries to the surface. he is 10 and wishes he was 'normal' it was great to be able to have a conversation where I could point out how wonderful he is and how there is no such thing as normal. Thank you Lori xxx

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading true life stories, but especially to those who work with, know of or want to find out more about dealing with the issues that may come up in the family when one of the children is gender non-conforming and/or LGBT.
I gave it 4 stars because it is such an accessible easy read and does not blind you with science or academia, although some points are backed up with quotes/footnotes on relevant research. The only thing to be aware of is the US bias, which is to be expected as the family is American.

Lori Duron's Raising My Rainbow is an excellent and important read that leaves the reader questioning their way of thinking about tolerance, acceptance, unconditional love, agape. What does a parent do when expectations are shattered, when the nature of their child brings bullying and hateful behavior? Duron walks the reader through the answer with painful poise; she writes intelligently, humorously, with sharp authentic sarcasm that resonates as if ones own inner voice. The words on the page and the spaces between the sentences clearly paint the image of what it is to give birth to a nonconforming child, the anxiety over wanting to keep her children safe, the fear engendered over wanting to protect CJ and his brother Chase from bullying and hatred. Through Duron we see that different is not bad, not evil, but just different. It is the light of her love that shines through on the page and makes this a compelling read. Her story, CJ's life, is our story, what it is to be human, vulnerable, open, raw, and face life without compromise. We suffer along through the consequences of taking on the bullies and hate mongers. Hours after I shut the last page, images of Duron's son, CJ, laughing and romping happily in a skirt, playing with his Barbie doll, still run through my mind and I can't help but think that were it not for the love, the unconditional love, of his mother and father, there may be no laughing at all. Highly recommend this read.

This is an autobiographical book about raising a transgender child. Written with honesty and warmth. It is however very American with a very different family lifestyle from that in the UK but the emotional issues are the same. Definitely worth reading.
