Meet sister’s Lucy and Juliet. Lucy the younger of the two has spent most of her life in Boston with their Mother, Fiona. Juliet, Lucy’s senior by more than a decade, stayed in England and has made a life for herself in the Lake District.

This book is cleverly told by switching between the characters one chapter at a time. This could be confusing but instead it is very easy to follow with significant incidents overlapped to tell us each sister’s point of view.

The complex nature of life as a Sister is covered in this book and as a Sister myself I can relate to how someone who is the complete opposite of yourself can be one of the most important people in your life. Because of their estrangement Lucy and Juliet need to discover this and each other.

I found the complex nature of their relationship fascinating and enjoyable and enjoyed the interesting relationships they both developed with others in the village.

I found there was a lot of talk of babies and children through the book. Now I know this is something which is extremely important for many people and this is why it crops up in so many books, but for me it activates an automatic off-switch in my brain which is definitely set up for escapism. I found myself skimming and flicking through sections to get back to the story without these elements in.

I really loved the dialogue between the Sisters and could have read so much more between them. I felt there were so many things we didn’t see said.

I did absolutely love the relationships formed with different men in the village, they had such unique relationships with them and Kate Hewitt took very interesting approaches to the romance aspect of the book to keep things a little more interesting.

Lucy's mother has ruined Lucy's life and she has to get away from it all. She leaves Boston and returns to England to live with her sister Juliet for a few months. Juliet has a bed & breakfast in Hartley-by-the Sea, which is a wonderful seaside village. What was supposed to be a healing stay is proving to be difficult when Juliet is far from welcoming and when Lucy's job for the time being proves to be tough. Lucy's boss Alex is strict and scary and she has to do her very best not to offend him.

Lucy tries to make the most of her stay in the village. She finds new friends easily which is something Juliet resents. There's nobody special in Juliet's life and she's very lonely. Lucy is determined to get along with her sister and every time they're taking a little step in the right direction. Juliet wants to let people in, but she's afraid, because she has so many wishes that might never be fulfilled. When they can finally talk about their mother the sisters finally bond a little. Will it be enough to get along and will they both find someone who will love them no matter what?

Rainy Day Sisters is a beautiful stories about two sisters who both had difficult childhoods because of their mother. She still influences their lives and the way they behave. They need to become their own person and when they finally get to know each other they have a chance to achieve that. I liked that aspect of the book a lot. Juliet is inaccessible, but she's also craving love. Opening up is scary and she tries to hide behind a mask of unfriendliness. It broke my heart because she deserves so much more. Lucy is such a kind and gentle person. Instead of being welcomed with open arms after the traumatic events in Boston she gets unfriendliness.

Format: Paperback
Rainy Day Sisters by Kate Hewitt is a novel any women's fiction reader will enjoy!

Told in dual POV's (Juliet and Lucy's), it was easy to feel part of their world in small town England. Juliet and Lucy have nothing in common except that they are half sisters. They are so different, yet they are both struggling in their lives right now. I liked how their relationship started out in Rainy Day Sisters, and I really enjoyed watching it grow, as Juliet and Lucy navigated all sorts of emotions and happenings. I like how different these two women are, and how it is reflected not only in their every day lives, but in the bond that is very slowly, sometimes painfully, forged between them as they get to know one another. There is huge character growth in Rainy Day Sisters, and this affects not only their relationships but their outlook on life. I felt strongly that these two women were good for each other, despite the difficulties they encountered, and I really enjoyed this journey with them. I really felt that I was there with them in their small English Village, and I couldn't wait to see what would happen with them and the others in their lives.

I enjoyed the unique secondary characters in this English village, they really helped bring the place to life and made me want to head straight there! The setting of this small village in England seems the perfect place for Lucy and Juliet's story to take place.

There are some strong sub plots that flow nicely in with the main plot of Rainy Day Sisters, all of them relevant to Lucy and Juliet. I felt that these strengthened the characters and made the story more dimensional, adding believability to their lives.

Rainy Day Sisters was a book that was easy for me to fall into and keep reading. The pace is good, and the writing flows off the pages. I'd recommend Rainy Day Sisters to any women's fiction reader!
