Melodic, intelligent and engaging both immediately and growing on you over time. The album works as a whole piece and manages to be simultaneously both uplifting and melancholic, polished and raw.
A precious pocket of musical sincerity and no little skill from the midst of the dross of the eighties and will disappoint no-one: buy it.

I might be biased as this is my favourite ever CD holdng my favourite track by my favourite band!
If you're thinking of trying out Deacon Blue this is their best album by a long way (with the added bonus of the 2nd disc)and simply blew me away at the time. Such a good mix of songs from the sad to the uplifting to suit any mood. If you think an 80s band is uncool forget about your image for a minute and buy this for simply great music. Can't recommend it enough although if you like the trash that hits the charts these days perhaps it's not for you.

2006 may not be the year to consider Deacon Blue fashionable again. However, if you're too young to have experienced this the first time around, it's worth risking your cool. There really isn't a bad track here and it remains their best by some distance. Compared to what the industry seems to be backing today, it's quite astonishing that something eclectic as this even made the Top Ten back in the day. Oh dear, I didn't want to sound that old...

If you like Deacon Blue, go buy this one. There's enough extra stuff on this 4 disc release to go and buy it once more, if you already have the original cd/lp. All the great b-sides (and the not so great b-sides) are all here and the whole album is compiled once more in live versions. On top of that there's a dvd with promo videos. If I should have asked for anything more, which I don't, it could have been some live footage on the dvd. Bravo Deacon Blue. All re-issues ought to be this complete.

Raintown is an album I've played and enjoyed many times. However, is this the best issue?

There are some things you may want to consider before you buy this (double disc) edition.

1) This remaster has more dynamic compression than the original issue. While it may seems to have more detail, some of the definition has been lost - it will likely be more tiring to listen to. I currently prefer the sound of the original.

2) There is some bad language on disc two, but no warning sticker.

3) The live stuff is not of brilliant sound quality, and not massively different in terms of arrangement.

4) The studio demos, etc. are quite interesting but I would strongly advise that if you can do so legally that you try before you buy. You may be better off getting the single disc version. (Still a little fruity on the notes to ...Spencer Davis... though)
