A wonderful book.Written simply but lyrical, almost using stream of consciousness but giving sensitive character insight.Macken effectively reveals the perceptions of young fisherfolk as they grow from boyhood to manhood.
Mico is at first cruelly rejected in favour of his so called smarter brother, by his mother who is proud of Tommy's academic achievement. He has a birthmark spoiling his looks , also ,but the writer gradually allows his character to evolve , showing how much he is the greater of the two sons.
Anyone who has experienced fishing or boating on the West coast of Ireland will appreciate the writer's vivid portrait of the power and destructive potential of the changing Atlantic seas.
A lovely story .
