This is a real refreshing change from the P&P 'what ifs' I have been reading recently. As with the usual 'what ifs' you can guess roughly where it is going and how it is going to turn out. However not with this book! Most variations change the basics, what if they meet in London before Pemberley or what if Mr Bennett died? This books changes the what ifs that could have occurred before the original P&P begins.

We do not see much of the Bennett family, but as a result we get more Darcy and Elizabeth, yay!! Usually with variations I need for things to turn out as expected regardless of how they get there. Enjoying the angst of will they won't they and misunderstandings galore. This book defies that and is the opposite to what I am accustom too, yet surprisingly I was not upset due to the fact the characters are skillfully built on a different 'what if ' foundation.
What I loved about this book was it's realism, Elizabeth was witty and impertinent, but not overly witty like so many variations which feel that she must say something that will amaze the whole room. The Colonel was a jovial character which was refreshing in comparison to other variations that make him really funny and suprise I actually liked Mr Hurst in this!
I loved the analysis that was done, incorporating the societal morals, values and customs of the era. Various concepts were explored which other P&P variations have not done in such detail, including why the late Mr Darcy seem to favor Wickham and why he was so jealous.
I loved this Darcy, a mans man who commands respect and oozes authority. He is very protective without being over bearing and loves Elizabeth most ardently. I recommend this book and if you like JAFF then enjoy!

This is a brave variation on Pride and Prejudice, which I feel the author has pulled off with some success.

If I'm honest, I didn't care much for the sex scenes as I feel they interfere with the integrity of the story and the continuous 'I love you's' can start to feel a little disingenuous after a while. However, having said that I am a grown up and I know where babies come from so it wasn't shocking, just a bit racy. If you're a bit coy in that department this might not be the book for you.

On the plus side it was a nice breath of fresh air to see some of my favourite characters gone bad. It's just like wandering into a parallel universe. Georgiana, who is usually quite irritating with her eternal blushing and fawning has at last turned into a scheming, sulky little minx, and I really liked her for it. But oh dear, Mr Bennet, I almost cried when I realised how mean he was in this variation, but it did make for a more interesting story. I would have liked to see a bit more of him in this version.

I also need to say I was very impressed with the author's knowledge of this time period, it seems she has really put a lot of effort into her research.

All in all, I really enjoyed this and will look forward to reading more from this author.

This is one of the ones I'll cue up for reading again on holiday in a few months. There's a huge difference in the personality of Mr Bennett and, sadly Jane. Georgiana is also cast as a scheming, spoilt girl but everyone else is as usual, though Mrs Bennett not quite what she should be. At first I thought pehaps I couldn't believe how Lizzy would accept the initial circumstances of their coming together but it was handled well and, anyway, they had to didn't they. I was holding my breath waiting for something to prevent our favourite couple being together and got quite lost inside the plot very quickly. You'll find all the usual suspects here but it's definitely Lizzy and Darcy being in love and making their future - with interruptions from scheming Georgiana, an ill considered attempt by Caroline Bingley and the ultimate showdown with the cad Wickham.

Although this had a reasonable idea for a start, the characters failed to be believable. I notice one reviewer said that it was well written which I found odd when it included poor English such as 'off of' throughout. The endearment 'love' also made me think of Darcey as a London cabbie and grated with me every time it was used. I actually found myself cringing when reading the conversations between Darcey, Elizabeth and even Colonel Fitzwilliam. They reminded me of scenes from the end of American TV
shows which are meant to make you smile but instead spoil the previous storyline and make you switch off quickly. Other characters such as Jane were also very odd. On the plus side the book was relatively cheap!

What a brilliant alternative. With the original characters maintained and developed to make the plot very readable. I just couldn't put it down until I had finished it. I recommend this most ardently!

I am a self confessed pride and prejudice sequel/variation addict. I bought this because the plot line looked good and it was chea enough to take a punt on it. Boy am I glad I did. I couldn't put this down. stayed up to 4 am finishing it! There are some erotic type scenes so if you dont like that in your p&p variations dont buy this.

I particularly enjoyed the different portrayal of some of the main charcters, and thought it was a great story … give it go you wont regret it.
