About the Author

The Reverend W. Awdry is fondly remembered as the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine. The little blue engine and his friends on the Island of Sodor were originally invented to amuse the reverend's son, Christopher, when he was recovering from a bout of the measles. The first book in The Railway Series, entitled The Three Railway Engines, was published in 1945.

This is a great book and a really enjoyable read. The storylines are simple, effective and entertaining with Oliver, the little green Great Western tank engine, who was rescued from scrap in the previous book, being the main character in several stories. There's are good variety of stories, featuring great characters such as Bulgy the bus, Donald's duck and the ever popular and mischievous troublesome trucks. The illustrations in this book are wonderful and really add character to the stories. It's also nice to see the Small Railway Engines appear again (even though they don't speak). The Railway series is excellent and I think that this is one of the best books in the series.

This is a nice older version of the Thomas stories. There is a lot more technical detail in this, than in the more modern series. This is lovely for real Thomas enthusiasts, but can make answering the little ones questions a little difficult if you don't have an in-depth knowledge of railways yourself!

Purchased as bedtime reading for my 2 year old as he loves Thomas the tank engine and especially the train called Oliver as it is his name too. He thinks they are great. The only down side I have is the Scottish engines, as I have no idea what they are saying half the time and have trouble pronouncing the words.

Puzzle crazy

"resource and sagacity"

The title of my review refers to the title of one of the stories in this book, so you can see it is not really a book for toddlers or very young kids. In fact, although it is part of the railway series, the book is quite technical and probably aimed at kids aged 7-9, although whether kids this age would go near anything associated with Thomas the Tank engine is another issue. Recently, Thomas and friends have been rebranded for tots, these older books can go over the heads of the taget audience. The book has some lovely original illustrations and some great stories, including one about a mean bus called Bulgy, who of couse, gets his comeuppance! Oliver, the titular engine is a lovely character, although one of the less well known in the series.He is saved from the scrapheap by the Fat Controller (giving a moral message to future railway enthusiasts!).
