The OPC Rail Atlas of Great Britain and Ireland was first published in 1977 and has, over the years, proved itself to be one of the most successful railway titles ever published. The book portrays the railway network on the British Isles, differentiating between passenger and freight lines, as well as between single and multi-track sections. It also shows preserved lines, freight terminals, LRT schemes, passenger stations, lines under construction, proposed lines, depots, etc. As such the book is an essential work of reference for both enthusiasts and professionals. This new edition is fully updated to reflect the developments in railway and LRT infrastructure due for completion by 2015 as well as those schemes currently under development. The new edition retains the convenient format established by the atlas but has several significant enhancements. The mapping on each page overlaps with the mapping on adjoining pages to make it easier to follow a long-distance route. Where appropriate, additional detailed inset maps have been drawn to show the complex railway developments in metropolitan areas such as Nottingham and Manchester. The size of the type in the index has been enlarged to make it more readable. The sequence of maps has also been reorganised where possible to make it easier to follow a route. The extent has been increased by an extra 8 pages to allow for these changes.

I was critical of the other rail atlas I bought but this one is excellent. Just about anything railway line route you can think of is included. It even has the proposed route of HST2 phase 2. All of the railways I know well are very accurately recorded and it is interesting to see how many new lines are planned across the UK. There is even a note about the connection of the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) and the GCR Loughborough to Leicester North although the proposed extension of the Robin Hood line is not mentioned although the freight only line is shown.

I know NOTHING about railways but my husband is a true train geek and former train spotter. I purchased this book for him for Christmas and he raves about it. The atlas is substantially improved in terms of look and feel over the last release. Maps seem clearer and there are several additions re: exploded areas . However errors do still remain, some decades old, as I've mentioned in previous reviews.
Regardless, the border overlaps and general feel make this a worthy addition to the series - a more interesting cover photo next time might help!

This new edition is an improvement on the previous Atlas with 16 extra pages of information and, to my mind, an improved page layout with a margin where the maps overlap which makes it easier to follow routes.
Now just need to find the time to mark the routes I have travelled, or this time mark the tracks yet to be journeyed over !
