Raich Carter - great footballer and a bighead.
on 17 April 2014
My Dad was a Sunderland supporter and used to rave about Carter. I saw him play for Hull City and you could hear his voice bellowing out instructions - not always in the supportive tone, although his class was there even at this stage in his career.Whilst manager at Leeds he used to turn out for friendlies, when John Charles was playing, and some supporters used to believe he used to play the ball to Charles, just out of reach in an attempt to discredit the Welshman. In fact he told Charles that if he was playing, in his prime, the spotlight would shift to Carter. In his book King Charles, the Welshman has some interesting quotes about his manager, not always complementary. Frank Garrick does mention Carter's arrogance reputation, but a certain amount of hero-worship, by the author, does immerge. His depth of research for the book is to be commended and is a worthwhile read about one of England's all time greats.
