Graphics are wonderfully detailed which as you can guess makes your graphics card(s) work. The game is designed for Nvidia gpus which is obvious in the video settings where there is a transcode option which passes the massive texture decoding from cpu to gpu - this apparently is faster - not sure about this. I installed it on my primary machine, AMD FX-6300, 3.5ghz, 6 cores, load of ram and 2 x ATI Radeon 5870s XXX editions in crossfire. There is a benchmarking tool in the options that suggest you run it before playing to determine how fast your machine can decode the textures so I did on my primary machine, the score was 55 - lees than good. My second machine, very similar setup except I use a Nvidia 560ti (single card) whichhas lower spec. than just one of my ATI cards, so I ran the test. Score 127 excellent. Right I thought the Nvidia will play the game better...it doesn't. In fact there is no difference between my two machines with this game. It still looks great but you can see the screen tear just slightly when you turn your character. It's like the screen is split 50/50 along the horizontal and one half moves very, very slightly faster than the other. It is very minor and in no way game breaking but it can be seen. But as I said the graphics are brilliantly done.
Sound is great too, good voice acting, great music, it feels like you're in a film.
Gameplay - Its already been said they are way too many items in your inventory, most you'll use once. It is a little rushed in general, there are plants to be found in the wasteland that are really beneficial but there's little chance you'll ever see them as you speed past in order to avoid bandits.
Bethesda seem short on ideas. At times I felt I was back in Skyrim picking mushrooms from inside caves and harvesting the few plants there are. The Jackal area of the game is a replica of Fallout New Vegas DLC Honest Hearts. The area is inhabited by a tribe which speak in native American tongue, brandish hatchets and use fire ammo. It is more of a tall area than a large area like the canyon in Honest Hearts.
All in all it is a very good game and well worth it at this bargain price. It's a shame they didn't get it right at release they could have cleaned up. It's a one-off play even though there are harder modes once you've been everywhere 2 or 3 times on your first playthrough you know what's coming.
Recommended purchase at current price.
From here you have to fight bandits, aliens, the government! Yeah! Anarchy! and collect strange meteorite material called Feltrite.
What makes this game great is the fantastic graphics, the great storylines, the interaction with many people and the fact that you can play many minigames in the towns such as cards and some Alien shooter game as well as go racing. I loved the game, it was like a better version of mass effect but I just wish it was bigger, there are only two towns to visit and you only do a couple of missions in the mutant infested capital but it is worth it.
Best Bits for me - Taking out a Mega Giant Mutant with a rocket launcher on top of a broken high rise building.
Best Weapon - Dynamite Bolts on the crossbow... attach a stick of dynamite to an arrow, stick that in an enemy and watch them jump about in fear before they go boom!
plus the shotgun for mutants!
All in all loads of fun.
Set in a post apocalyptic world, it is a peculiar combination of a shooter, with a strong car racing theme and the basic game is well worth the price but for anyone who is tempted to buy, I would strongly suggest you go a little further and also buy the Scorchers DLC.
But shooting isn't the only thing you're doing, you can race around the world in your own upgradable vehicle and if that's not enough you can compete in races ranging from normal time trials to all out rocket launcher racing.
Graphics are maybe not looking great at all times because of the way the game engine streams textures, but it does it efficiently enough to run the game at good 60 frames per second at nearly all times.
The story is the following: You're a member of the Ark program. You and a few others were sealed inside a small vault to hide under the earth's surface to be revived and survive an incoming meteorite that would crash into the earth. When you're finally released out of your cryonic chamber a much longer time period has passed than it was planned and you're stuck in an apocalyptic world. To survive you have to adapt and learn the ways of the "Wastes".
To be honest I expected a bit more of the game, especially of the story. The game isn't that long until you see the credits rolling, but it was fun the whole time. While I'm not a big fan of the old shooter mechanics (in my opinion a headshot should kill someone, doesn't matter what bullet hits) so at the middle of the game I was already down on the easiest setting (I started on the hardest).
I also felt that in the later missions many weapons and ammunition types were pretty much useless and more often I was using maybe one or two weapons. Although it does feature a lot of weapons they aren't really needed further in the game (especially the last mission is beatable with only one specific weapon only).
BUT altogether it was enjoyable the whole time, while the game world is pretty static it looks very detailed and some of the places are wonderful to just look at. It's maybe not a must-buy but it was enjoyable none the less!
One thing that really annoyed me though, was the menu for the weapon and ammo switching which was clearly designed for an Xbox 360 gamepad and not for a mouse or keyboard.
To sum it up:
+Performance
+Setting
+A few weapons and everyone has different ammo types to play around with
-Texture streaming sometimes produces blurry walls or objects
-Story is rather bland
Still it is a fun game, but I expected more from the story and especially the ending. It's still a fun game and was enjoyable throughout. I really like the overall feel and look of the game.
