Product Description

About the Author

E. W. Hornung was friendly with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and married his sister. Hornung took his brother-in-law's detective pair, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, and reincarnated them on the wrong side of the law as Raffles and Bunny, who pursued the business of getting a living by the entirely logical method of stealing it.

Conan Doyle wrote in his autobiography: "I think I may claim that his famous character Raffles was a kind of inversion of Sherlock Holmes, Bunny playing Watson. He admits as much in his kindly dedication. I think there are few finder examples of short-story writing in our language than these, though I confess I think they are rather dangerous in their suggestion. I told him so before he put pen to paper, and the result has, I fear, borne me out. You must not make the criminal a hero."

it is hard to make crimes against property romantic and/or heroic, and Hornung tries with Raffles, making him the essential English gentleman, who has veered slightly to the wrong...but who keeps his chivalrous ideals intact, in spite of all...who steals from nasty and/or very rich people, who lives by a code of honour, and who finally dies fighting for England...does this work? maybe when the reader is 12, and believes in the legend of Robin Hood, and shares in a nebulous wish to rebel against the restrictions of a rigid society, but not when the reader is 72, and does not want to be burglered (spelling?) even by a romantic, dashing hero...a life of crime is then sordid and despicable, and Hornung does not have the skills(if it is even possible) to make it appear appealing...so too bad, too sad...goodbye to Raffles and to youthful "pranks"!

I lost interest in this book. It started well but tailed off. Better read Maurice Leblancs's Arsene Lupin books. Much better read.

Those of us who remember Anthony Valentine as Raffles in the TV series will love these stories. Always a clever twist at the end!
