A good portrayal of one of Europe's finest football managers and coachesâ¦â¦I would recommend this book. -- readthegame.com (November 2005)
On May 25th 2005, Liverpool FC won the Champions League Final in one of the most memorable and extraordinary nights of English football. Rafa Benitez's success in Spanish football was immense, but now he has surpassed even that success with Liverpool FC's extraordinary win in the Champions League Final. This authorised biography of Rafa Benitez is a vivid and lively account of both his personal and professional life, from early days right through to his current achievements with Liverpool. Following his debut in the Real Madrid football school and a modest career as a player, he became a coach, leading both Extremadura and the Tenerife football teams to the first division of Spanish football, before moving to Valencia with whom he won two League titles and the UEFA Cup. A football coach and specialist from early on in his career, his capacity for analysis and hard work have earned him a considerable reputation worldwide. Readers of this fascinating book will gain a real insight into what motivates Benitez, his attention to detail, his man-mangement skills, his sharp football mind and his constant quest to develop the skills of himself and his players.Author, Paco Lloret has been a sports journalist for over twenty years. Head of Sport at Spain's Canal Nou TV station, he presents a weekly sports programme. He first met Benitez in Valencia in 1996, through a mutual friend, and has been in frequent contact since, giving him a privileged standpoint to explore the personality and achievements of the manager who led Liverpool to European glory in this year's Champions League. While it reads well most of the time it occasionally stumbles. Sometimes pages seem out of order, you're told something with no lead in then the next section fills it in. Maybe just the style of the book but doesn't seem to be done perfectly. There's also a few typo's still in there, possibly due to it being translated (presumably) and to finish the criticism there is no index.
You will find out a lot more about Rafa reading this book, which was my aim, an overall feeling of his coaching style, his dedication, his stubbornness and a little of his personal life (Turkey doesn't just have good memories for him) and it certainly very interesting to read but its not an exceptional sports biography.
it tells us nothing of benitezs methods or beliefs as a coach .
it tells us nothing of his tactics or philosphy as a coach.
it tells us little about the man nothing of his staff or the great passion that he has for his job.
Rafa, do a proper book , on modern coaching and tactics in sport , this is below average.
