Why does Jon Nakamatsu not have a bigger profile than he does? He certainly deserves one.

Maybe it's due to the sparsity of recordings. If you think you heard enough of Rachmaninov 3 to last you a lifetime and have all the recordings of the barnstorming greats on your shelf then perhaps you should relent and buy this CD. I was impressed on 1st hearing and then was more impressed on subsequent hearings. Nakamatsu has the virtuosity and musicality to carry this concerto off without playing to the gallery. Dare I say it some of this recording is reminiscent of the younger Horowitz in his more lyrical mode.

The other work on this recording is the Paganini Rhapsody which Nakamatsu dispatches with considerable aplomb and dexterity.

The balance between pianist and orchestra is good even if the recording on the whole is a little less full-blooded than many would expect.

In short ... buy it. You will definitely enjoy it. Then see what else Nakamatsu has recorded.

I was fortunate enough to attend a concert of the Rochester Philharmonic with Nakamatsu playing these pieces and was awed. The "Rach 3" is known to be technically one of the most difficult pieces to play, and many pianists just bang it out. Yet despite his tiny hands, Nakamatsu, winner of the 1997 Van Cliburn competition, played -- and plays on the CD -- both Rachmaninoff pieces with power, grace, and sensitivity. Although both pieces are of course quite well known, Nakamatsu and the RPO made them sound new and fresh. Run, don't walk, and buy anything Nakamatsu records!
