Chœur de la Radio Lettone - Sigvards Klava, direction

Review

''Rachmaninov intended his setting of the most common liturgy of the Russian Orthodox Church to be used in an ecclisiastical context, so the music - reverent, restrained and slow-moving - suits this fine performance in Riga's Dome Cathedral.'' --The Daily Telegraph

HASH(0x92db94c8) out of 5 stars Liturgy of St. John Chrysotom 20 Sept. 2010
By V. Jackson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by Sergei Rachmaninov is featured on a new recording by the Latvian Radio Choir on the Ondine Label. This full-time professional choir was founded in 1940 and is currently led by Sigvards Klava. This a wonderful recording. The choir sings with great expressiveness and each part is well balanced. The tone quality is beautiful and the diction is first rate. If you close your eyes and listen you can almost imagine that you are in the Riga Dome Cathedral where this cd was recorded. I highly recommend this cd.

HASH(0x92c25fc0) out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Recording, But... 2 Feb. 2013
By Robert B. Lamm - Published on Amazon.com

I agree with everything the prior reviewer said. This is a gorgeous recording, and if you close your eyes you can imagine yourself in the Riga cathedral with this wonderful choir right there. The problem I have with this is that the piece itself is boring. I admit that I may be somewhat of a philistine when it comes to Russian liturgical music, but despite the lushness of the music, the brilliance of the chorus, the wonderful sound engineering, the music itself doesn't grab me the way some other great choral works do.
