Product Description

From the Back Cover

The 24 preludes and 17 etudes-tableaux of Serge Rachmaninoff include what are possibly his finest compositions for solo piano. Each of these masterly works is included in this complete collection, reproduced from recent, authoritative Russian editions. They include: Prelude, Op. 3, No. 2; Ten Preludes, Op. 23; Thirteen Preludes, Op. 32; Eight Etudes-tableaux, Op. 33; Nine Etudes-tableaux, Op. 39. Among these are the enormously popular C-sharp minor prelude, Op. 3, No. 2; the G-minor prelude, Op. 23, No. 5; and the B-minor prelude, Op. 32, No. 10 classics that have made Rachmaninoff one of the most performed and recorded modern composers.
Each of these works reflects Rachmaninoff's emotional intensity, his thrilling gifts as a melodist and his ability to crystallize perfectly a particular mood or sentiment. In their sonorous textures and rich embellishment, they reflect as well his sovereign command of keyboard technique and his spectacular gifts as a pianist (he was one of the very greatest pianists of the 20th century). This beautifully produced yet inexpensive edition will provide both amateur and professional pianists a lifetime of study and enjoyment, and will afford music lovers as well the deep pleasures of following, music in hand, live and recorded performances of these keyboard masterpieces.
Unabridged Dover (1988) republication of portions of "Socineniya dlya fortepiano, "Volumes 1 & 2, published by Izdatel'stvo "Muzyka," Moscow, 1975, 1976."

Format: Paperback
This volume is a comprehensive Rachmaninoff collection containing all his preludes and etudes, including the famous C# minor prelude from his early years as well as his well-known G minor, C minor and B flat preludes; all great music. Etudes-Tableaux are picturesque and colorful, having elements of the Russian melodic style, such as the D minor Op. 33. For any aspiring pianists, this is essential repertoire and the edition & price are fantastic. Nice picture on the cover (Russian domes in the background).

You dont need me to tell you that the music itself is obviously five star quality.
This particular edition, though, is a bit of a pain. The general layout makes it hard to read - things should have been spaced out a bit more. The book does not easily sit flat on a music desk. Some of the page turns are in awkward places.
There is a lot of great music here for the price, but my advice is to spend a bit more on a different edition.

Well i can hardly comment on the music itself. If you don't know it you should. If you don't you are probably not good enough to play it. Dover Publications, high quality stuff generally, this is no exception. For some the notes may be a little small, i had no problem with it personally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music, accurate edition, great price. 30 Nov. 2005
By A Humble Musician - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book has given me countless evenings of entertainment. Rachmaninoff's preludes and etudes offer a very wide variety of styles and colors over a wide range of difficulty. Intermediate piano students will benefit greatly from learning some of the less challenging preludes and etudes, as these pieces prove indispensable ways to develop a good singing tone and a good ear for bringing out different voices and paying attention to counterpoint.

More importantly, the pieces themselves stand as a testament to Rachmaninoff's compositional creativity and mastery, and are simply a pleasure to play and to listen to.

I found the editing and printing to be quite satisfactory, and Dover's price makes this an essential purchase for anyone seriously studing the art of piano.

4.0 out of 5 stars good for the price 23 Oct. 2000

For the price, this is a good book. But I found the print a little bit light. So if your eyes aren't that great anymore, be aware.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a score that is complete 2 Jun. 2012
By cricket - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I like this edition of the Rachmaninoff Preludes and Etudes-Tableaux because it is truly complete. It is easy to get scores of all of the Preludes (both Op. 23 and Op 32) but finding a collection of ALL of the Etudes-Tableaux is not easy. Many editions are labeled as "complete" but they don't include many of the Etudes-Tableaux. I don't know why they are called "complete".
This edition includes all of the Etudes-Tableaux plus all the Preludes. Thus it's title is correct. Dover has done a good job once again.

3.0 out of 5 stars A lot of wrong notes 13 Dec. 2013
By Bob Logan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is a decent inexpensive edition, but be warned that it is not well edited. In learning the op. 39 set I have been surprised at how many engraving errors I've found (mostly wrong notes and accidentals). The Schirmer edition does not have most of these mistakes and is easier to read, though I hesitate to recommend it because (1) it has mistakes of its own and (2) the binding fell apart quickly.
