Product description

Product Description

Charles Lloyd celebrates his 70th birthday in March and ECM marks the occasion with a live album, recorded in Basel last year, featuring a revamped quartet with young stars Jason Moran on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and drummer Eric Harland. Exciting set includes the Lloyd classic Sweet Georgia Bright plus new material, both up-tempo and ballad-oriented, and the title track, a beautiful cover of Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez's tune.

Lloyd is regarded as one of the world's most exceptional saxophone voices, his sound steeped in the deep roots of jazz and blues and also attuned to the musical possibilities of the wider world.

Library of Congress poet laureate Charles Simic catches both the rural and the city aspects of Lloyd's music in verse written especially for this edition. The classic sax/piano/bass/drums format has provided a context for some of Lloyd's finest music. He has worked with outstanding pianists in his long career: Keith Jarrett, Bobo Stenson, Geri Allen, Michel Pertrucciani etc. In the new quartet it's Jason Moran, whose percussive attack lights fires. Originally influenced by Thelonious Monk and taught by Andrew Hill, he brings strong rhythmic feeling and deep musical insight to the quartet. Moran already has a history with drummer Eric Harland, intensifying the rhythmic interaction that lifts Lloyd skyward on up-tempo workouts including a blistering "Sweet Georgia Bright".

There are also tender ballads, including the title track, Cuban songwriter Silvio Rodríguez's "Rabo de Nube" ("tail of a cloud"), a mountaintop meditation with the tarogato (Ramanujan), a tribute to Booker Little, and more. Harland, increasingly seen as one of the most important contemporary jazz drummers, has played with McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Greg Osby, and Dave Holland. Reuben Rogers, a much sought after sideman, was born in the Virgin Islands and grew up listening to calypso and reggae as well as jazz, exposure that seems to have impacted on the lyrical dancing swing of his bass playing. He works exceptionally well with Harland exploring elastic grooves behind Lloyd's poetic and/or emotional solos.

Personnel:
Charles Lloyd - (tenor saxophone, alto flute, tarogato), Jason Moran - (piano), Reuben Rogers - (double-bass), Eric Harland - (drums)

(4 stars) There is not a wasted second over these 75 minutes...a powerful and varied set...Lloyd is magisterial. -- Jazzwise, (Duncan Heining), May 2008

(5 stars) Harland and Rogers take no prisoners...Lloyd dovetails perfectly in a programme of Lloyd-penned world-jazz drones and furious swingers. -- Financial Times, (Mike Hobart), April 5, 2008

(5 stars) Lloyd proves he can match his past output...his compositional talents are well-displayed...gorgeous examples of his 'late period'. -- BBC Music Magazine, (Barry Witherden), June 2008
