a slim, stylish volume Scotland Outdoors

About the Author

Nicola Chester's unique observations of wildlife first came to public attention when she won the BBC Wildlife nature writing competition more than a decade ago. She has been a columnist for the RSPB's Birds magazine since 2006, and combines her nature writing with the demands of raising a young family, but still finds as much time as she can to watch, track and study the diverse wildlife on her home patch in the Berkshire downs.

Format: Paperback
An extremely good, well-written and comprehensive introduction to otters. This book naturally concentrates on the Eurasian Otter, Lutra lutra, since that is native to Britain, but has good, accurate synopses of the other species. It is very well written and illustrated, and is very accessible - everyone in my otter-wearied family who has idly scanned through yet another otter book has been hooked and read the whole thing voluntarily (no mean feat in my house!). I greatly recommend this as a beginner to intermediate level otter book, before going on to eg Kruuk's Wild Otters: Predation and Population , or Harris' Otters: A Study of the Recent Lutrinae. This is a valuable addition to otter literature for the general reader.

I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this great little book. Nicolas writing is informative and reflects her knowledge of the subject and her passion for nature in general. Each chapter is detailed and offers an insight into the lives of otters both past, present and into the future. The text is enhanced by the stunning photographs and detailed captions. I would certainly recommend this book and look forward to reading more nature books by Nicola in the future.
