Along with her albums 'Diana Ross' (1970), 'The Boss' (1978) and 'Surrender' (1972) Diana Ross's vocals have never been stronger or more emotionally connected with the songs she sings. Rather than going for an all-out imitation of Billie Holiday, who's songs she sings, she gives her own unique style to them, and somehow her nasal, 60's pop perfect voice matches every song like they were written especially for her. She really throws her soul into the material and it glitters. The orchestration by long-time colaborator Gil Askey is perfect, and has the feel of those old Jazz records from the 40's and 50's. Even non-jazz fans will appreciate this album.
The only complaint is the dialogue, but that's hardly a detractor. Yes, it does become irritating if you just want to listen to the music without the dialogue, but you can always skip the track and the problem is solved.
It's a real shame the film that this soundtrack comes from hasn't yet been released in the UK, but a perfect accompanyment to this album is Diana Ross's live 1992 jazz concert dvd/cd, where she performs all of the songs here.
I had a copy originally on compact cassette and listening to the voices in between songs has brought it all back.
