Product Description

Review

...Satisfyingly put together, with beautiful patterned and textured hardback covers and a ribbon for finding your way back to a chosen page....There are very few photographs, instead relying heavily on botanical artists for their depictions of the plants, a lovely touch that serves both to unify the look of the books and to bestow upon them a sort of Victorian sensibility that plays nicely on the Society's history and image....useful, endlessly interesting and very good-looking... (Gardeners Illustrated)

Book Description

A beautifully illustrated manual of great-tasting vegetables and their history, cultivation and preparation.

Not quite sure how to rate it really as I've sorely misinterpreted the title. I thought it would be based upon the 'varieties' of specific vegetable groups (e.g. Sweet Sandwich onion vs. Alicia Craig) based on a culinary advantage such as flavour or suitability for given dishes or better fried or roasted etc. as opposed to giving me a basic rundown of vegetables in general & the origins of vegetables that I already know about. It's more history book than anything else. It simply isn't the book I imagined it to be so be wary of that title.

This book looks lovely. Pretty cover and end papers, nice photos of vegetable illustrations. The huge disappointment is the text. It seems intended for the beginner, and though I am more of an enthusiastic gardener-cook than a very proficient one I have struggled to find much useful advice. The problem is you would have to be ignorant about vegetables in general to find this book of use. A typical description is that provided for the aubergine "To many people, the aubergine probably looks more of a curiosity with its white or purple shaped fruits, rather than something appetising...Today it is treated with a similar contempt or sceptical attitude..." Oh, please!

Informative book, great for knowing what to do with the more unusual stuff you can grow.
