I wish I'd had this reference when I first started gardening, its absolutely invaluable. It will save you a huge amount of time, money and heart ache simply by arming you with the information you need about buying a plant that has a good chance of surviving in your chosen spot in the garden. I wouldn't be without it.

This was recommended to me by a gardening friend, and I've since received a copy as a present, and bought copies to give to two others. Useful and compact little book, good to have in the pocket when buying plants. Very small type, though.

I had forgotten this book existed. It is so useful and not too big to put in your bag when visiting the garden centre. I am suprised there are not more books available that give info and what plants to put where as we gardeners could waste a lot of money. Labelling on plants is not always very clear so if you are a novice gardener this is a great book to have on the shelf. I worked in a garden centre, so have some knowledge, but this book really helps to ensure that I don't make any expensive planting mistakes.

A really useful book, divided into sections which list plants suitable for various conditions - damp shade, hot sunny spots, hedging, clay soils, acid soils etc. There is basic detail about each plant so you can start to shortlist the various plants likely to survive in diffeent parts of the garden. My only reservation is that you're unlikely to use more than 3 or 4 sections of the book - unless you have a really varied garden - so it feels like you're wasting some of it. The RHS What Plant When is better in that respect - and seemed to have more plants listed. Having said that, I wouldn't be without either and am constantly going back to them for ideas.

Really helpful book for the beginner or just to provide some suggestions for specific locations in the garden. The categories make a lot of sense and there is a clear description and good colour photos of the plants. I was a little surprised at the small format of the book as it's a bit to chunky to be pocket sized.

No help if you don't read it but bags of useful tips if you do. My wife and I have found this very helpful indeed, learning what different plants we can site in our garden in full sun, shade, plus the types of soild they need too. can wait to see the results in the summer (if we have one!). Great little book hand to have around along with the RHS What Plant When book.

Fantastic and compact reference book, perfect for the beginner or more experienced gardener. I you are just starting out with your first garden this is an essential book to start you in the right direction and avoid common mistakes in positioning your new plants and giving ideas for what to put in more unusual positions.
For the more experienced gardener this is also great for helping with finding plants for problem areas or coming up with new ideas that you might never have thought of before.
RHS as always are helpful and reliable and the book size makes it perfect for taking with you when visiting your local garden centre.

This book is just what I needed when I had to create a garden in containers. I had asked my nephew if I could borrow his copy, but he wouldn't let me, so I bought my own! So glad that I did.
