I was looking for a book which told me where a plant grows in the wild and thus its ideal growing conditions (rather than just buying plants I like and hoping they'll grow where they're planted). This book does this and lots more giving you all the information you could possibly need. Excellent value for money for what will be a well-thumbed book.

This is a good reference book for those involved in the plant world. Good illustrations and easy to navigate.
Working in a nursery I find this to be the book I go to for descriptions of plants, where to grow and how, I would not be without it.

I have the original version of this book - it has the green cover. The two books are identical - there is no update or new edition, the only difference is the cover design.

As you would expect of an RHS publication, this encyclopaedia is hugely informative, covering a wide range of cultivars and varieties within the plant listings and providing all the necessary detail as to cultivation, propagation method, height & spread. The alphabetical listings are interspersed with lots of photos and boxes containing information about plant combinations. I am a plant enthusiast and garden designer and this is something of a bible for me.

The wife has the RHS book of Plants and Flowers, the sister book to this. She is for ever referring to it as she models and plans the garden. This book will be used in the same way, i'm sure, which means that I cannot use either as bookends. However the brownie points for buying it for her should last well into 2015.

AN excellent volume, threatening to replace my other perennial books e.g. Graham Stuart Thomas. The biggest attraction is the incredible detail, it lists many cultivars including rare and recent. Quality pictures, this deserves to be the definitive volume for hardy planters.

Simply has all the information I need for an upcoming project. Easy to use and concise with descriptions, etc.
We don't have access (in Australia) to all the wonderful perennials in this book, but it enables me to assess other varieties and species within the plant genera I am interested in.
