Normally, with most IEM's, I tend to find the need to boost the bass, or top up the treble... With these, the frequencies need no adjustment at all. I can happily leave the equaliser off.
If I was reviewing for the sound alone, they would easily be worthy of a 5 star rating. They do however have a downside.
The cables are a let down, to what is an otherwise perfectly produced pair of 'phones.
I'm now approximately five months into my use of these, and the outer sheathing of the cable has started to split and fray. At first, it just looked a little wrinkled, taking on an appearance almost akin to elephant skin, but those wrinkles are now starting to become splits instead.
These earphones are a work of art, nice earphones are usually quite ugly but it's definitely not the case here. Every part of these IEMs ooze quality to me, the milled StSteel bits are glorious. The included accessories are also very well designed and look great. It's too bad that the included ear tips, while numerous, are not anything special; the silicone ones included are no different from the ones included on a £15 pair. Especially the foam ones, which are very hard and rough; no memory foam here. The over ear design works quite well and these earphones stay in your ear well when you find your ideal tip.
I've been buying £60-£90 IEMs for a while now, and my last pair were Bose Sound Trues which served me very well and have a very 'fun' sound; bucket-loads of bass, good mids and inoffensive highs. However I wanted something with better vocal clarity.
If I compare the SoundTrue to the MA750, the STs crush the MA750s in terms of bass, the MA750s are nowhere near as comfortable, and the mids are more pleasant on the STs. What the MA750s do have over the STs, are sparkling highs, more controlled bass, and aesthetics. These earphones definitely need a burn-in period, as out of the box the highs are rather sibilant, and mids and bass are quite weak. They also benefit hugely from a EQ, which I believe is true for any audio device. I'll include a picture of the EQ I use for these earphones on my phone.
Starting with the lows, it's not a bass-head's dream these earphones. Rather, these earphones have a quality over quantity approach to the bass, there's not that much bass but where it exists is precise in delivery and rather pleasant. This is rather different compared to the STs that have a large amount of bass all the time and is less distinct in where the bass is strongest in a song. I like my bass quite a lot so I have it boosted.
Mids are there, but I give it a little push with the EQ to get it where I like it. Nothing too special here.
The highs are this earphone's selling point, as seen on the marketing. When you listen to a song with acoustic guitar, you can hear and feel the guitarist's fingers brush against the strings, not to mention that female vocals sound great. I gave the highs a small boost so they won't lose against the bass I boosted.
Conclusion: These earphones look great, and with an EQ and some burn-in sound great too. Build quality, design and the highs are the selling points of these IEMs. I would describe the comfort as average, I would not recommend these for jogging or sports. But if you're a bass-head or you like how beats sound, they're not for you and you should buy earphones that advertise strong bass.
I tested the MA750i against:
- RHA T10i - Despite almost double the price, the MA750i just sounded better. The build quality of the T10i were better, and the comfort over the ear slightly better, but I just found the clarity was not as good as these.
- Dunu Ttitan5 - Although impressive detail, the Titan 5 lacked bass and the highs were too harsh
- Soundmagic E80C - the 750i excelled in every department
- V-Moda ZN - Although impressive bass, the clarity was just ok. I felt they would have been an ok option but at double the price of the 750i, there wasn't any real comparison
- Soundmagic E10 - my beloved e10 have lasted a long time and still continue to impress. However the 750i does sound better and worth the cost to upgrade
Overall, I'm really happy with the sound quality. I had to play a bit with the fitting and as someone who hasn't had the over ear loop in a headphone before, I find it mildly irritating. However, I am getting used to it now and for the impressive sound these kick out its something I'm willing to continue with to get used to.
NB having the remote plays havoc with any volume attenuators/buffers/limiters if you use these to limit noise spikes. I run one on airplanes to stop announcements defeaning me, and with the remote it cuts out half the soundtrack (in some films), unless you hold in one of the buttons - which is no use to anyone. Without the buffer they work fine, but then you're back to the cabin crew deafening you with tannoy announcements.
I have to use a separate headphone amp when using the headphones with an IPhone 5s as the phone doesn't push them enough fort liking , although my old iPhone 4s sounds excellent ,but this is down to Apple who reduced the sound capabilities on the 5s , just a heads up really .
My conclusion on the RHA's is that they sound excellent and they are far better than many earphones twice the price but I had trouble getting them to fit which is probably more to do with my odd shaped ears more than anything
