Product Description

The full uncut widescreen version of Tonino Valerii's A REASON TO LIVE, A REASON TO DIE, known in some markets as MASSACRE AT FORT HOLMAN. A REASON TO LIVE, A REASON TO DIE is a highly entertaining Civil War derivative of THE DIRTY DOZEN. Union Colonel Pembroke (James Coburn) rescues seven condemned men from the gallows in order to attach impregnable Fort Holman, commanded by insane Confederate Major Frank Ward (Telly Savalas), ostensibly because of the fortress' strategic location as the key to the significant routes of the American Southwest. In fact Pembroke, wants revenge for Ward's cowardly and unjust murder of Pembroke's son. The film follows the adventures of the eight men as they make their way to Fort Holman and culminates with a length and stirring battle in which most men on both sides are massacred. Also stars Bud Spencer. DVD FEATURES Anamorphic (16:9) Widescreen Version English audio Trailers and TV Spots Picture Gallery Alternative scenes 4 page booklet Filmographies Biographies Trivia

Una ragione per vivere e una per morire (AKA: A Reason to Live, A Reason to Die & Massacre at Fort Holman) is directed by Tonino Valerii, who also co-writes with Rafael Azcona and Ernesto Gastaldi. It stars James Coburn, Telly Savalas & Bud Spencer. Cinematographer is Alejandro Ulloa and the music is scored by Riz Ortolani. Plot sees Coburn as Union Colonel Pembroke, who during the Civil War is given a rag-tag group of criminals to go win back the fort he lost to Confederate Major Frank Ward (Savalas). For him it`s a chance to regain his honour, for them it`s a chance to avoid execution for their crimes.

Joplin Gazette
Joplin Missouri, April 10, 1872

---Today I walked through the ruins of what was once Fort Holman. 10 years ago, this Civil War fortress, thought to be impregnable, was destroyed by a wild bunch of marauders. Eli Sampson, a survivor of that massacre, revealed in an interview that the raid was the result of a blood feud between two bitter men: Colonel Pembroke, a Union officer, thought to be a traitor and a coward, led the mission to recapture the fort he had once surrendered. Major Ward, a ruthless "Mad Genius," who joined the Confederacy solely to gain command of Fort Holman, so that he could rule the vast surrounding Santa Fe territory after the war. But what motivates these two men and what caused this incredible blood bath, was explained by Eli Sampson in the story that follows---

It`s a written opening that grabs the attention straight away, it has all the promise of a spaghetti western done Peckinpah style. Then early in proceedings a grizzled James Coburn walks along a line of men about to be hanged, being introduced to them and calmly wondering if said scum-bags would like to stave off execution by accompanying him on a suicide mission?

The story is obviously inspired by "The Dirty Dozen" and has James Coburn's Colonel recruiting a tough bunch of condemned men to help him take back a fort being held by a sadistic Major (Telly Savalas).
I'll start off by saying that in this version James Coburn is dubbed. In fairness the dubbing of his voice isn't too bad, but it would have been nice to have had the choice to watch with Coburn's voice but it switching to subtitles for the few bits that he never voiced. There was a longer Italian version but Coburn only did his voice for the shorter US version. However, now for the good news; this version has a 20 odd minute opening sequence that shows Coburn and Bud Spencer being captured and this scene always seems to be missing from the version when on TV. Lets face it anymore of Coburn is a big plus and he's great throughout the film and as cool as it gets. In all honesty the film would be a lot more forgettable if it wasn't for Coburn's super cool presence and charisma throughout. Surprisingly this Spaghetti is actually very low on actual gun play or action. It's only the fort end sequence when most of the action flows and it's great stuff with bullets flying like rain and bad guys dropping like flies. As with most Spaghetti Westerns the cinematography is impressive and direction good. It's not a classic by any means but it's still enjoyable and a must have for any serious fans of the genre.
3.5 stars.

Colonel Pembroke is sent to recapture Fort Holman, which he surrendered as a Union commander to his enemy Major Ward who killed his son. His team consists of seven convicted men, mostly vagabonds, looters and rapists. Promising them a treasure of gold which he claims is hidden, so they all set out to infiltrate the fort and retake it.

This is an obvious remake of The Dirty Dozen but instead of it been set in World War Two it is now set at the end of the American Civil War. The convicted men seem to be just be there to be killed off at a later date (with the exception of Bud Spencer) and they could have been so much better, in my opinion they should of built them characters up and got some more well known actors in to play them, my ideal seven would have been, Spencer, Benito Stefanelli (Same role), Klaus Kinski (The Sergeant), Aldo Sambrell (instead of the Indian), Romano Puppo, Jose Terron, Ugo Fangareggi (same role).

Even though the characters could have been much better, I still enjoyed this film and director Tonino Valerii handles the film very well, the best piece of direction been the end siege on the fort. The fort itself was made for El Condor (with Lee van Cleef) and used in a lot of Spaghetti Westerns and it is a great looking Fort built in a brilliant desert and mountain location.

The music by Riz Ortolani is okay but I felt it could have been better as I felt no emotion in his score.

This is a entertaining film that kept me entertained all the way to the end.

I had seen this on cable in the UK in a badly cut and poorly transfered but I think it is deserving
a better recognition mainly because it stars of my favourite actors of all time James Coburn and Telly Savalas
even though Coburn is badly dubbed. The plot is basicaly a dirty dozen rip off but it is non the worse for it.
