But having read sparkies previous review before buying, i had my reservations.
But the straps did exactly what they are supposed to.
They are really supposed to be for heavy lifters, i wouldn't describe myself as a particularly heavy lifter in the gym, I lift a reasonable amount but often have to stop on exercises like shrugs, dumbell rows and deadlifts because my grip gives out before my arms.
So my reasons for buying the straps was due to having previously injured tendons in my hands and arms and getting recurring problems with them. I work as an abseiler, so between my work and the gym, i can do a lot of pulling exercises. I get pain in my arms, wrist and hands and it can affect my grip.
The product picture shows the pad resting on the hand, but i used it with the pad wrapped around the opposite side of the bar and back under my hand and it took virtually all the load off my hand and supports it on my wrists and stops any chance of the bar rolling in my hands.
The straps were of very robust construction, the wide wrist strap gave good support on the wrists, the stitching was solid and the pad itself gives good grip.
I really cannot see too much wrong with this product, it will help me lift more in the gym and protect my hands from injury.
The price seems to fluctuate a lot. I am currently without a pair because my last ones ripped. I was going to buy a new pair here last week and they were £10. I got distracted and didn't finish the purchase, came back today to get them and they're £16. That's too much. So I'll keep an eye on them and wait till they're reasonably priced. A product that when used properly only has a 3 or 4 month lifespan should not cost that much.
For heavy weightlifting there are three or four options: traditional straps, which loop round your wrist and then loop several times around the bar; hooks which also loop round your wrist then have an easy, fairly rigid 'hook' which goes under the barbell, or these which are a flexible non-slip gel pad which goes around the bar.
The issue I have with straps is the set up time - by the time I loop the strap around the bar I'm no longer psyched up for the lift, and I'm generally in a poor position to lift. I find it easy to 'brace' myself while standing, reach down and lift almost immediately.
These gel pads have a shorter set up time - however they still do take some time to bend the gel pad around the bar. Unlike hooks, which are pre-formed to fit around the bar, these are straight, meaning they travel along your wrist, along the front of your palm to your fingertips in a straight line. To get them around the bar takes a bit of fidgeting - and again, this can mean that you are out of position or no longer psyched for your lift.
It does get better - as you wear them in, the pads start to curl slightly, but it's still not quite enough to make the set up seamless.
Having said that, if you know that these gel pad type straps are for you then this is a great purchase. I've held a deadlift of well over 100kg with one finger using these, so the non-slip pad really works.
For me, I'll be trying hooks - but keeping with the RDX brand as I have never been disappointed with the quality of their items.
One negative side is this product wear out quickly; the list band and flap can be separated easily. I have already purchased this a couple of times in the past 12 months.
