If you've ever spent any time in East Anglia, or even more Cambridgeshire / Huntingdonshire, you'll know that you can barely go five or ten miles in any direction without stumbling upon an old bomber airfield. Bomber command as a whole has been well documented over the last few years, and this book focuses on a group of aircrew who took the bravery of the Bomber Boys to a whole new level. Its well illustrated throughout with some fascinating photos, particularly the poignant view of cars parked at Downham Market whose owners had failed to return from ops, and chronologically goes through Pathfinder operations in considerable detail from the forces formation to disbandment. Details of simply unbelievable commitment and bravery - how the hell did these guys go out and do this night after night, week after week, fully aware of the incredible risk, it simply leaves you in awe.

There's been little information on this subject until bomber command was finally publicly acknowledged for the part it played in ensuring success in WW2. The risks they took and the dangers they faced deserve to be understood in the same way as those faced by all other branches of the armed forces have been for years.

Well written and researched about an interesting subject considering how much is written about other activities of Bomber Command. This was of particular interest to me as my Father was part of the Pathfinders stationed at Little Staughton

This book is a must-have for anyone with interest in Bomber Command Ops. Well written in a style that makes it easy to follow the timeline of the creation and operations of WW2 target marking. The narrative is not just at 'story' level but the author adds greatly to the interest by interspersing the text with useful, clear descriptions of the weird and wonderful bombing and navigation devices and techniques; each placed at the relevant point in the timeline of events. There are also stirring stories of individual aircrew heroism throughout the book. Well supported by useful appendices and a large number of excellent photos. Really good value for money.

A really informative book about the elite 8 Group Pathfinder Squadrons at war.

A concise and well written volume, it gives a clear path of understanding of the aims and objectives of the Pathfinders and their development into the leading edge of the Bomber Command Sword. Easy to read, but still informative, it is enjoyable from start to finish. Well illustrated with photo's that I have not seen before, I heartily recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Bomber Command Story.

had the privilege of helping organise the Pathfinder 50th Anniversary. and hear the "forward" given as the Address at the 50th Anniversary in Ely Cathedral. Very informative and a great tribute to some of the 55,000 Bomber Command aircrew you never made it home

A great deal of information on how this system was developed and why it was needed. The great risks taken by those carrying it out were quite clear.
