Boy, did this "collection" disappoint me.
I don't want to nitpick, but I'm forced to tear this thing up and tell you my opinion why this is one of the worst scattered grouping of music under one collection I've ever ran into.
On CD1, there is 20 songs and only TWO are worthy of the title of 'anthem':
Alicia Keys' "Fallin'" and TLC's "Waterfalls." The other 18 are at best top 40, to be sure, but to say they are even close to being classics you'll hear 20 years from now and you can still say they sound just as fresh and deep in message as these two? Forget it.
On CD2, there is 20 songs, and only ONE makes the cut as an anthem:
Brownstone's "If You Love Me." There is one honorable mention: Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful," as it has become a gay anthem with a life all it's own.
On CD3, there are 20 songs, and almost all of them are straight-up hip-hop songs! How can Jay-Z and Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock be "R&B"? Granted, they have Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" and Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" in there, but everything else is strictly hip-hop.
In case anyone who did the song selection at Sony BMG Europe forgot, R&B means "rhythm and blues" - where is Luther Vandross? Al Green? Natalie Cole? Stevie Wonder? Aretha Franklin?
Another note to the editor: When you put Kelis' "Milkshake" and Dead Prez' "Hip Hop" in with a collection of "R&B Anthems," you might want to consider new employment, because not only can you not read, you cannot categorize types of music.
This should have been titled "60 Mostly Hip-Hop Songs, With Only A FEW 'Anthems' And Fewer R&B Songs To Speak Of."
Don't buy this, you'd be better off finding your own 'anthems' than waste good money on what you probably have scattered around in your CD collection already!
Good luck, and check out my other reviews - thanks!
