Bonn also includes pen portraits of all the major players,Manon Roland and Brissot are described as they wrote about themselves at the time. There are plenty of extracts from Camille's writings, letters and newspapers, more than the usual sources give, and although Bonn obviously loves him and is a member of L'Association Camille Desmoulins he does draw attention to the dangers of the spite his runaway pen could and did cause.
Simon Schama said we are in need of a new English biography for Camille when he wrote Citizens - until he writes one -this will do. I suggest reading it with Ruth Scurr's 'A Fatal Purity' and Norman Hampson's 'Danton'. I am guessing that anyone looking at this will already have read Hilary Mantel's 'A Place of Greater Safety'
A free press! something we are still talking about today with Leveson and phone hacking - Camille would have been the first to speak up for it now - whatever the downsides - just as he did then when it meant his death.
