Building on the success of the VideoMic Pro, which launched in early 2011 and quickly became the defacto standard for DSLR on-camera audio, and RODE’s original Stereo VideoMic, the new Stereo VideoMic Pro provides a high quality stereo option for videographers, and is ideal for recording music, and the atmospheric ambience essential in building a realistic audio scene. Based around a matched pair of high sensitivity ½”cardioid condenser capsules in a coincident XY pair, the Stereo VideoMic Pro provides a wide stereo image with natural depth. The Stereo VideoMic Pro builds on the feature set of the VideoMic Pro, with an ergonomic form factor perfectly suited to DSLR, consumer camcorders and large-sensor video cameras. The integrated shock mounting system provides superior isolation from vibration and mechanical noise that can otherwise degrade the recording quality. Additionally the lightweight yet robust multi-strand cable provides excellent acoustic decoupling from the camera and offers significantly lower noise transference than traditional audio cable. The user friendly designed rear of the microphone body features the power and equalisation controls, including a high pass filter at 75Hz which is designed to cut out the noise generated by air conditioning, traffic and other undesirable low frequency interference. A -10dB PAD allows the user to reduce the sensitivity of the microphone, making it suitable for recording loud sound sources such as live music or at sporting events. Like the VideoMic Pro, the Stereo VideoMic Pro features a +20dB level boost specifically designed to provide a higher quality signal with DSLR cameras. When activated, the typically low quality camera preamp level can be reduced, resulting in a lower noise floor and much clearer recording.

It picks up an astonishing level of detail, with excellent stereo separation, especially when set to the +20db mode. In fact I've found that the best setting for picking up field ambience is to set the sensitivity down to minimum on the camera, then keep the mic on the +20db mode. The preamp in the mic is much quieter than the camera's, so you get nice detailed recordings with virtually no background hiss.
The shock-mount is well designed and keeps out most, if not all, mechanical noise from moving the camera. The windshield, on the other hand, is not much use, and wind noise becomes an issue even with a light breeze. However you can easily solve this with a "deadcat" furry windshield.
The mic does take a 9V battery which is quite chunky and not the cheapest to buy, but it seems to last for a very long time - I'm still on the first battery and have used the mic for many hours now.
All in all, you will not be disappointed with this mic, it offers remarkable sound quality at a reasonable price.
Dead Kitten Windjammer- when outside, the slightest gust of wind will undo all the great work that's gone into this mic. I truly am totally amazed with this mic.
I also own the previous version of this product which is much bigger. I bought the new stereo videomic pro because it is lighter and more compact, making it more suitable for use with a DSLR or compact camcorder. It offers much better audio quality than the on-board camera's microphone. It allows you to add a "dead cat" to block out wind noise (ideal if you film outdoors and actually want to hear what you are recording when you play it back, rather than hear distorted wind noise - which is nigh on impossible to sort out in post production - you may be able to lessen the problem, but you will not get perfect audio and it is very time consuming; much better to record the audio correctly in the first place!). The green light tells you when it is on and this turns red when the battery is low. Audio quality is excellent. It is well made and backed by the RODE warranty.
As it is multi-directional it easily picks up bird song and other sounds of nature while maintaining a crisp audio when I am talking to the camera.
I use this mic on my Panasonic HC-VX870 HD camcorder and it fits securely using the Panasonic shoe adapter (supplied with camera).
I'd definitely advise buying a Rode Deadkitten Windshield for this mic if you are intending to film outdoors as the audio quality is not affected but wind noise is all but eliminated even in very strong wind.
Don't buy a directional mic if you are going to be filming outdoors in the countryside - yes they are cheaper but you will lose the ambient sound which really adds to the quality of audio.
Rode Stereo Videomic Pro (muti-directional external mic) is highly recommended.
The solution is to use a headphone jack extender and tape the sensitive mic cable section to the gimbal / adapter you are fixing the mic to. That way you minimize any movement of the mic cable.
i wish they used the red type interchangable cable the cheaper video micro uses. Theres no issue with this model.
