Product Description

A strong cast heads up this classic British thriller in a beautiful coastal setting, with stunning cinematography.

Jane Foster, the former wife of a criminal, moves to a coastal town and takes over the running of a bar known as The Quiet Woman. Initially she's outraged when she learns that the previous owner had allowed an amiable local artist, and part-time smuggler, Duncan McLeod (Derek Bond) to use the inn as a base. In spite of her resentment she becomes romantically involved with him. Problems arise when McLeod's old flame arrives on the scene. Jealous of Jane she taunts her about her past, and threatens to expose her.

Clear picture, lovely black & white scenery, a simple yet well told story. Derek Bond plays an amateur smuggler & artist, who is shocked to find his secure storage place now belongs to a new owner of the local inn. Jane Hilton plays the new owner, with a secret past she would rather keep secret. Into this mix comes Derek Bond's old Navy chum, now a Custom's & Excise officer, plus an escaped convict. Good performances by Dora Brian & Michael Balfour are included. The only downside, (as with many British films of this era), is the inclusion of the obligatory American star(?). But that aside this is a very enjoyable film, with a good mix of drama, romance & comedy. Put it in the DVD, sit back, & wallow in pure nostalgia.

Routine drama - less a thriller, more a melodramatic women's picture and certainly no classic, in any generally accepted use of the term - made interesting by its setting around Rye and Winchelsea. It has a good sea chase climax, marred slightly by very poor back projection. The title refers to a pub with an extraordinary sign depicting a woman with a padlocked mouth (!) and to the central character, who is intent on keeping quiet about her shady past and the wherabouts of her criminal husband. It should appeal to fans of Jane Hylton, who has a strong, attractively appealing presence that exudes decency. Derek Bond plays the Paul Temple-like, suave and sophisticated artist/smuggler she falls in love with. Dora Bryan and Michael Balfour play their devoted, comic working-class employees.

Love anything with Jane Hylton in. Deserved more high profile parts. Entertaining early fifties mild entertainment. Interesting characters, including a young amusing Dora Bryan.
