Product Description

Product Description

Box set containing three western movies. 'The Quiet Man' (1952) is directed by John Ford and stars John Wayne as Sean Thornton, an Irish-American boxer who refuses to fight again after a traumatic bout. But when love intervenes he is forced to return to the ring to win the heart and hand of local girl Mary Kate (Maureen O'Hara), whose brother, squire Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglan), objects to the match. In 'Stagecoach' (1939), native American Geronimo is on the warpath in the untamed Wild West, but a stagecoach-load of travellers decide to take their chances and make their way across Utah's Monument Valley. The passenger list comprises an alcoholic doctor (Thomas Mitchell), a shamed prostitute (Claire Trevor), the pregnant wife of a cavalry officer (Louise Platt), a shady bank manager (Berton Churchill), a timid whiskey salesman (Donald Meek) and an on-the-run gambler (John Carradine). En route, they pick up outlaw the Ringo Kid (Wayne) and, as the journey continues, each of the troupe are given a chance to show their true colours. Finally, in 'Rooster Cogburn', a rough and ready lawman (Wayne) teams up with prim missionary Eula Goodnight (Katharine Hepburn), who wants to find the men who killed her father.

I don't know whether the set I received when buying from Amazon is typical and what everybody else got. Buying secondhand, I got a flimsy piece of folded car with cut slots for the dics inside. Nothing written on this insert at all, even the printed pattern has nothing to do with what's inside. Normal technical details are on the back of the flimsy card slipcase.

But, the films really are Wayne's best and are all five starrers. I wanted 1932's Stagecoach, his breakthrough film and still a classic - enjoyable action and build up of characters, so we rally for them when they get attacked by the Indians.

Rooster Cogburn is arguably Katherine Hepburn's film, in the same way that she dominated Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen. But the relationship here, from what it was to what it becomes is the real story.

And, finally to one of John Ford's last, his ode to his ancestral Ireland, The Quiet Man. The greens are so lushly vibrant and Wayne is almost an old man. Quaint, charming and very different to the Duke's cowboy and indian days.

I paid literally a couple of pounds for my set, 18 months ago. IF you can find it at a car-boot sale or at a similar price and only want the films, not how nicely they're packaged, then this is a must, not only for fans of Wayne, but for any film-lover.

This DVD set was bought as a Christmas gift for my father....he has had the film (The Quiet Man) in many formats over the years, but after watching it he said this was the best colour film he had seen.
It was the best present he had...his words, not mine. The exact words he said was BRILLIANT, I loved it, that was the best present I had.... That made my day.

The purchase was a set of three John Wayne DVDs, The Quiet Man, Stagecoach and Rooster Cogburn, which were described as being secondhand but in very good condition. The condition was not in fact as described. The Quiet Man played all right, apart from occasional brief flashes of magenta; but Stagecoach had deep surface damage, which prevented the DVD playing through without interruption. Only by racing through the damaged sections, could the rest be played at all. I have yet to try Rooster Cogburn.
Amazon offered a refund, but I wanted to keep The Quiet Man, so did not take up the offer.

Fantastic movie, great fun, great story, lovely athmosphere. Rooster Cogburn also a fab movie with the wonderful Katherine Hepburn, great relationship between these two characters. Stagecoach I'm just going to have to watch as it's years since I've seen it and havn't had a chance yet. Great box set worth the money.

This is only a rating of the films who is terribly bad. It looks like the studio have taken "The quiet man" from a worn out vhs tape, the colors are blurred and no danish subs and it is not much better with the two others. The film "Rooster Cogburn" has danish subs as the only one.I thought
that all three had been translated as stated. My hope is that the studio- UCA- stops, making such bad dvds. Don't hope the rest of their productions
are like this.
The seller send them securely and they arrived safely and they are playable.
One star for the studio and five for the seller.

Great selection of JW films! STAGECOACH is one of my all-time favourite Westerns with sublime photography of Utah landscapes and great action sequences, plus immaculate direction from John Ford and high quality acting all round. A must-see. Similar adjectives for THE QUIET MAN with absolutely fabulous photography and extremely perceptive direction. Wayne and O'Hara are at the top of their considerable acting powers and humour is typically Irish, whimsical to the eyeballs, and with very sharp tongues thrown in for good contest. Finally, ROOSTER COGBURN is the weakest of the three but it is still darned good fun!

The Quiet man is one of John Waynes most under rated films he ever made. so different from all his other movies, the film has a strong cast to support his character as Mr Wayne used play himself in most of his long line of movies
