I would class this book as an important contribution to Western and Islamic thought, a beautiful piece of writing with an urgent and necessary message.

Read it, share it and write about it - I think it will have more relevance in our world than we might think.

If you enjoy Ramadan's thinking, then this is another excellent book in which he develops his theory of pluralism. Easy and a pleasure to read. I found that I wanted to dip into it at random rather than to work my way through from beginning to end and that this was a rewarding way to read the book. It is very broad-ranging, and Ramadan tackles diverse approaches to his subject. Inevitably there are parts of his argument I don't agree with, but I found this added to the richness of the book as a whole. Ramadan takes his mission very seriously and sometimes the language gets a little flowery and ponderous. But I think the most impressive - and moving - element is his attempt to combine erudition and politics with a sense of poetry and the divine.

Tariq Ramadan's previous book "What I believe" was said to be his response to his many detractors, both from within Islam and without. This book, "The Quest for Meaning" is a far more powerful response.

Many writers (and orators) point up the differences between those of different religions, cultures, etc. Here, Tariq Ramadan searches for the common ground. In his "Quest" he draws upon spiritual, religious, philosophical and traditional thoughts and ideas, from across the ages and from every continent. On the way he uses scientific, psychological, political and other sources, as well as literature from all traditions and ages. And his range of debate spans many varied aspects of life and spirituality, where there are so many opportunities for division and disagreement: yet he highlights how these divisions matter less than the commonalities.

Critical argument interspersed with deep reflection lead to a satisfying, powerful read.

I was looking forward to reading this, but the chapter on gender is appalling. Pseudo-science dressed up as fact. No serious scholar should be citing John Gray as an authority on gender. If you're looking for something on pluralism, I'd suggest something better informed.
