After a gap of several years, this is the ninth book in the Ursula Blanchard series. The political plot concerns the Northern Rebellion by the Earls of Northumberland and Westmoreland to restore Mary to the throne of Scotland and then to replace Elizabeth as Queen of England. The personal plotline that intermeshes with this and provides human interest involves solving a 23 year old mystery and proving the innocence of a dead man so his son can marry the girl of his choice. The details of this are a bit implausible but it's very readable stuff and it's great to see Ursula and her circle, wonderfully drawn and likeable characters, in a story again when I thought this series had ended. At least two more have been published as well and I look forward to them. 4/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good Ursula Blanchard mystery 14 Jan. 2012
By T. Harper - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
After reading the other Ursula Blanchard mysteries when they were released many years ago, I thought the series was finished. Truthfully, Buckley could have stopped with the last book, but I'm happy that she didn't. I was interested to see how the characters had changed, but they really haven't. The mystery itself is twofold - a love interest challenged by an old murder, and of course Elizabethan era intrigue. I was mostly interested in the love interest and old poisoning angle. It was a very good weekend read.
4.0 out of 5 stars Glad to see a new one in this series. 18 May 2012

This installment was a longtime coming. I enjoyed following Ursula and crew on yet another mystery. I was afraid I'd seen the last of this series. All in all I liked it. It was a nice light read with some great action and suspense. I have always liked a strong female lead in the books I read and a good cast of supporting characters, and as always Ursula delivers.
5.0 out of 5 stars Once Again a Superior Story 12 Mar. 2013

As usual I loved the book. Buckley 's characters are strong; the story suspenseful. I don't know if I've just read too many or if she's becoming predictable but I figured out who did it early on. Didn't destroy my desire to finish the book though.
