Clever idea but perhaps as a non chess player found the toing and froing a little tiresome. The references of sacks of 'potatoes' being loaded, 'potatoes' growing in Wales and 'tea' being served in the vestry after funerals in the period 930 AD !!. So glad I had read Owen Tudor and the Secret Diary of Eleanor Cobham previously to reading Queens Sacrifice or I might have been put off reading further Tony Riches books.

What a brilliant idea! A very readable story giving insight into all of the main characters in the battle for survival of North and South Wales. I was enthralled from beginning to end.
Even though the story stands in its own right, I found an added dimension by following the events alongside the actual Fisher Game of 1956. I enjoyed alternating between the game and determining what action would take place next in the story.
You don't need to be able to understand Chess to follow the story, but it is interesting how one game can be envisaged as a human battle for supremacy.

A lot of characters with traditional Welsh names, which was a challenge to my short term memmory. But an interesting, original, easy to follow plot.

A very good book with a different twist to usual medieval times and from the Welsh point of view of the war between 2 welsh kings and the English King. Also tells how much the Welsh admired the females and their Queens.

I found the book slightly
Confusing as it took me sometime to sort out who was who, once I had sorted out who was who the plot was fairly simple, not as good as his previous books.

My first Tony Riches book and an excellent start, looking forward to reading others by Riches. Highly recommended as entertaining an an interesting education in a period and character I've not come across before.
