Doreen Orion's travel memoir is hilarious. She has a gift for finding the funny in the world around her.
"Queen of the Road: The True Tale of 47 States, 22,000 Miles, 200 Shoes, 2 Cats, 1 Poodle, a Husband, and a Bus with a Will of Its Own "is the story of what happens when two psychiatrists with disparate personalities, a dog and two cats travel across the U.S. in a converted ocean blue, red and turquoise tour bus with a Jeep-in-tow for a year.
Tim, her workaholic husband, is a generous handyman and an enthusiastic outdoors man.
Doreen describes herself as a misanthropic couch potato and shopaholic who loves hanging out in the great indoors. She says she gravitated away from patient care to do insurance reviews so she could stay home all day in her nightgown.
Some of their misadventures with the bus include brake failure, the bus' door repeatedly flying open when they hit 60 mph on the highway and getting suck in the middle a busy four-lane road.
Living together twenty-four/seven, the amazing places they visited, the fascinating people they met on this forty-seven state, 22,000-mile odyssey had a life-changing effect.
Doreen grew to appreciate the simple life, began enjoying the great outdoors and discovered a new passion - photography. Tim cut back on his psychiatric practice, spends more time doing handyman projects and hanging out with friends.
Doreen says she still enjoys her martinis (each chapter begins with a humorous martini recipe) but she doesn't seem to drink as many since she doesn't require quite the anesthetizing she did during the bus thing.
