Best part of 73 minutes of magic. The heart running through the album is I guess rockabilly - kind of an angry Imelda May for those who know her work also. However, that almost does a disservice to an album of great variety. Within it's tracks I found rock, blues, some delicious latin style horns, and countless moments that reminded me of a wild array of artists. To name but a few I found elements that would fit on albums by Madness, Chris Isaak, and even Portishead..... Try pigeon holing that! Also tracks where Colleen Duffy,(a.k.a. Devil Doll), is exposed with just bass guitar accompaniment are outstanding. For what it's worth her more recent album, The Return Of Eve,(after a bafflingly long gap), is also extremely good.
So why the caveat ? Well the last track an extended slow soul/blues burner actually has a pressing fault,(I know as I have bought 2 copies from different sources),whereby there are 2 brief "plopping" noises in the last minute.
No matter, this is a great album especially for those who appreciate variety, punch and emotion in their music. Buy it anyway.

What a great experience this album is! It has all the passion, energy and raw feeling of punk, but is suffused with a mixture of rockabilly and swing that lends it a classy air and gives it a veneer of respectability. Its 73 minutes pass all too quickly, in a frenetic haze of slap bass, guitars and warm, expressive vocals. Devil Doll is a real class act, with a strong central performance from Colleen Duffy that holds it all together while the backing band work easily in a whole variety of idioms to produce some really great, energetic music. 5 stars all round.

Colleen Duffy has a captivating voice, and she sings with clarity and real emotion. There's a mixture of styles on this cd, but they all work brilliantly

I agree with other reviewers this is a brilliantly-original, musically-versatile album. In my view it far surpasses the obvious comparison- Imelda May- whose backing group is smaller and so the arrangements are a bit samey.

But what surprises me is that having bought this CD over a year ago, is that it now appears to have become virtually unobtainable (along with the follow-up album) except at very high prices! Was this a limited pressing by the record company which may perhaps have gone out of business? Does anyone on Amazon know?
