Based on an astounding and outrageous true story two-time Tony nominee Mary Testa stars as Anna Edson Taylor who in 1901 at the age of 63 set out to be the first woman to shoot Niagara Falls in a barrel of her own design. Navigating both the treacherous Falls and a fickle public with a ravenous appetite for sensationalism this unconventional heroine vies for her legacy in a world clamoring with swindling managers assassins revolutionaries moralizing family anarchists and activists. Convinced that there is greatness in her and determined not to live as ordinary she sets out to battle her fear and tempt her fate.

Mary Testa Rules!
on 13 November 2012 - Published on Amazon.com
I was fortunate enough to see this show and having it preserved on disc is a godsend. Serious musical theater lovers will revel in this score and the titanic performance by Mary Testa. It's a perfect combination of actress and role. The entire ensemble is first-rate and the orchestrations are excellent.
Sophisticated and original musical theatre.

As with all of LaChuisa's work, "Queen" is sophisticated, original and uneven. Is he perhaps the first composer/lyricist to make a greater impact in recordings than from live performances of the shows themselves? Regardless, his work must be heard.

IT TRIES TOO HARD
on 17 August 2012 - Published on Amazon.com
To begin with, you have to admire the earnestness of this recording. Every second of this disc fairly drips with sincerity and pathos. Based on the true story of an over-the-hill schoolteacher who tries for fame and fortune by being the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel (she does succeed, so this isn't a spoiler), MJ LaChiusa'a latest effort should be a thrilling and inspiring parable about the quest for success. Well, QUEEN OF THE MIST is about the quest for success, but it is neither thrilling nor inspiring. Mary Testa brings her formidable talents to her portrayal of Anna Edson Taylor (the barrel lady), and invests her with gravitas and determination. But in the end, this is a story of an inherently unlikeable character who succeeds brilliantly and fails miserably. The music is ponderous and heavy, which is your first clue, and the lyrics are not much better. Compared to some of LaChiusa's other work, notably THE WILD PARTY and SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE (to name two), QUEEN OF THE MIST falls far short of its aspirations, and is likely to appeal only to diehard LaChuisa fans. I'm still one of those, but I won't be reaching for this disc again any time soon.

I was skeptical to buy since poor reviews, but people can be wrong. This story is great. Mary Testa sings beautifully and does an amazing job. The music is fantastic. A Must BUY!

I love musicals that you can follow the story and plot by simply listening to the music. This is a good example. But there is nothing like seeing a musical in person and especially on Broadway. I can't wait to see this one even if it's done by a local playhouse.
