Quantum Field Theory: A Modern Introduction is undoubtedly the standard setting textbook in this field; as it is the only up-to-date introductory textbook to cover the `modern' approach to quantum field theory (QFT).

In this textbook, Michio Kaku, goes far beyond existing texts, and presents material vital to the modern approach to QFT. Topics such as critical phenomena, lattice gauge theory, supersymmetry, quantum gravity, supergravity, and superstrings are all included in this textbook and are not included in other textbooks on QFT.

There are also over 260 exercises included within the text.

Top reviews from United Kingdom

This book is the best introduction in QFT I have ever read. Of course, you need a lot of mathematical background but this is self-evident.
The main emphasis is on the Standard Model of the Elementary particles. If you want to know about the Standard Model, this is THE book!
Starting from the classical field theory, Kaku introduces QFT through the most important Group Theory. Then he continues to describe relativistic quantum mechanics, QED, Feynman rules, S-matrix, Gauge Theory, Standard Model and even beyond the Standard Model: Lattice Gauge Theory, Monopoles, Supersymmetry and Superstring Theory.
The Feynman path integral formalism is clearly introduced via postulates and with a lot of examples.
Kaku gives advantages and (seldom found in other books) also disadvantages of the used mathematical methods for quantization schemes and Renormalization types.
In one word : superb!

Kaku's book 'Quantum Field Theory: a Modern Introduction' really covers a lot of material, from single-particle equations to supersymmetry and a brief introduction to superstrings. It is therefore a good reference. However, none of the chapters is really amazing, it is a good book to read if one wants to gain an overview about QFT but it is definitely disappointing for those searching for deeper and more interesting treatments of the subject.

Sorry, I couldn't make head or tail of this book. Maybe I just don't have enough background, but I do have a degree in Physics (even if it is a very old one).

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Quantum Field Theory Intro, maybe a little more.
Reviewed in the United States on 6 January 2013
This book by Michio Kaku, is probably the best book I could find on Quantum world, but such is as I was looking for. I believe that theory is only as good as its intentions; since I didn't grow up in the same day as my great great grandparents, and I grew up being friends mostly with foreigners, I learned that . I do not claim to understand the intentions of these inventions, it is to me a tool that has so many little simple parts, an average person like myself would most probably spend years of on and off reading to find an application for it and flesh it out. Dreams and visions help more than this book, but Michios works are practically foundational for todays works in "future" technologies.

Remember to use your technology for it's "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.", (Jesus Christ the Lord) so that your works be not in vain. And also remember what King Solomon said "All advancement is vanity." But also that "Desire is a fountain (spring) of life." (King Solomon)

Noah, the builder of the Ark, in ancient times took a hundred years to build his successful craft, would good works of large size and good quality also take us so long? I'd guess yes and no. Today there are more believers than there were then, but we have violent lands which are the biggest hold back other than our "wait for goodness rather than advancement". As an Italian saying, "Good food takes time." And remember Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park I -- "Life finds a way." the chaotician: so there you have it.

If I could improve one thing of this work, I would make it pdf or text so that I could read it on my digital reader and not boast too much of it while I am in coffee shops or retail book stores.

5.0 out of 5 stars Schwierig zu beschaffendes wissenschaftliches Buch
Reviewed in Germany on 23 November 2013

Danke!
