Other reviewers have mentioned that they had difficulty balancing on the scales, as I was already trained by my previous scales I had no difficulty. I simply stepped on to a central place carefully in the right position. Unlike my previous scales which gave detailed explicit instructions and warnings about this these scales just expect you to follow the image so I can see why people might have difficulty. If you are not used to them my advice is to follow the image very carefully. I am also used to using a wii fit board which also requires some care with positioning. I tried putting my foot on the edge and it did tip up as described but so would my other pair. There was no prompting to be barefoot either but as I already knew that it could not work otherwise it was not a problem for me but would think it may have led to other reviewers difficulties. These scales are read via a free app which can be used on apple and android devices. I downloaded it and registered on my iPad and my htc android phone. The phone did ask for Bluetooth to be turned on so I guess that's how it communicates with the scales. The iPad just got on with it. It was a little slow for the scales to get registered with my wifi but only 5 minutes tops. The scales are also controlled via the app and it took a few goes to work out which mode to be In and configure the scales accordingly. I had to input my personal data and register. The scales give a pleasing little shudder when they are done. Then rather excitingly it told me my weight, bmi and body fat and muscle percentages. Admittedly it wasn't the figures I wanted to see! But it is what I need to know. I think Qardio have spent a lot of money on design and app development and the app graphics are pleasing and I found them intuitive. There were no difficulties alternating use between my iPad and my android phone. The app records the data for up to eight users who can only access their own data giving privacy between themselves. It will present this in different ways, including a graph which I liked a lot, and show changes over time. It is possible, and encouraged to set goals and reminders. I have found the information to be presented in a very clear and oddly motivating way. I guess because it's a little like a game. One mode will display the weight, smiley faces etc on the scales themselves. As a shortsighted person I found using an app easier, I always had to bend down when using my other scales if I was not wearing my glasses. It's no trouble using the scales via the app as I tend to have either my iPad or my phone nearby most of the time. I have used the scales on a hard floor only and have found no need for the extra feet supplied yet. It comes supplied with eight, yes, eight AAA batteries. They haven't run out yet but will be expensive to replace. However this pair of scales is not for the cost conscious, it is expensive. It is more for the style conscious, a bit like an iPhone. I try not to fall for too much of that but I really like these and am hankering after the blood pressure monitor they make which you can also record on the app. For me if you've got the money the overall design is pleasing enough to make these worth it. Recommended!
1st off I took out the scales and notice there where additional pads in the box for the base. Having seen other reviews about stability issues I stuck on some extra pads and removed the battery tab so the scales would turn on. In truth the pads help, but the platform is still a little unstable. Maybe my large size doesn't help but I wanted these scales to help encourage me to shed some weight.
I then followed the instruction and downloaded the app and ran it, setting up an account. The set up procedure told me to turn on my android phones Bluetooth, which confused me as I thought as stated on the box I would be using my wifi. I mean its not like I am going to go out the house with the scales and my wifi covers all my rooms. Anyway I did as instructed then hit go and stepped on the scales. My phone read connecting... For ages...and ages...and ages...then the scales smiley face disappeared, told me I weighed 499 pounds and seemed to switch off. Undeterred I tried again and this time it seemed to work. It asked my details and then asked me to setup the wifi. I did this and thought all was well. I noticed my profile had my first weight set a 499lbs so thought I would try to delete that reading and start afresh. I turned the app on again and it told me to turn my bluetooth on again. It was still on! So I hit accept and it turned my bluetooth off and the phone asked me to step on the scales. It then tells me it can't talk to the scales. So I turned the bluetooth on and the scales/app wanted me to go through the setup again. I did this and nothing I tried would help me setup, make the scales work or let my phone talk to the scales.
Then the scales burst into life showing me the batteries were low. Ha ha I thought must just be bad batteries in the scales. I changed the offending batteries, which had come new and tab covered in the scales. Went through the set up again and all appeared to be working. Not wanting to have to write a really negative review I gave it an hour or two then went back to try again.
It asked me to setup again and kept complaining it couldn't connect or just leaving Me standing on the scales for 10 minutes trying to connect. I though maybe my wifi network is down. Ironically my phone pinged to tell me I got mail. From Qardio telling me "congratulations and welcome". So my wifi network was working. The first email was followed by a 2nd email telling me of a firmware update for the scales...
I know I thought to myself. I will get my daughter to setup on the I-Phone. I have reviewed quite a few products that use apps, sometimes the Android apps have not worked or been as stable as the IOS versions. She set up with fairly little hassle although We had to change the batteries again. The 8 expensive high power batteries I had put in scales had drained !
I can't use these scales with my phone without it telling me to setup again and then not connect. The I-phone app seems easier to setup than the android app. We tried My Wifes android phone and had no joy with that.
So to summarise. I think my scales are faulty. Something seems to cause it to eat batteries. Just my luck I guess I get seeds in seedless grapes so typical for me :) I would have liked to be able to use these scales to help me loose weight. Gadget challenges spur me on. Alas it's not to be. I will try again in a few days and see if I get any joy will revisit this review. I thought it was important to give my tale of woe and hope no one else goes through the same troubles I have had.
I also own the QardioArm and love that product, hence also assuming the QardioBase would offer me the same experience - I was sadly wrong. It's completely inaccurate, and my weight can vary by 3-5lbs within minutes of each reading.
I'm having mine replaced to help address the accuracy point, but the round design is something I'm prepared to just out up with so my data is under the same app as the QardioArm, but words just don't describe what a ridiculous decision someone made in their design team. Totally form over function.
UPDATE: I've had the unit replaced and the new one is as inaccurate as the first - even after supposed calibration. Slight movement on the scale can throw the measurement off by pounds. I just can't take these 'quirks' any more. I'd prefer a more accurate scale with less functionality.
Some of the reviews are clearly made by people affiliated with Qardio. They are spouting their marketing lines in the reviews with not mention of the stability problem or inaccuracy - I can see through this a mile off!
Since writing this review, I've tried Withings, Fitbit and a couple of other, and the one I've settled on and think is the most accurate and beat designed is the iHealth Core. Great scale, accurate and beautifully designed - oh and doesn't wobble like this ridiculous Qardio rubbish!
