Stay away from this product. You are better off building your own NAS out of computer parts and it would probably be cheaper and last longer.
The qnap warranty is less than what the Hard Drive manufacturer offer, I suspect this could be because QNAP has less faith in the quality and reliability of their products than what the rest of the industry considers to be weakest component for this type of systems (usually the mechanical hard drives are considered the weakest point).
My experience so far with this product is backing up this theory.
The product looks nice but what it brings in functionality and design it lacks in reliability.
The first NAS had an issue with recognizing the HD's and I had to request a replacement from Amazon as instructed by the qnap support team.
A couple of months later the 2nd NAS stopped working and all of a sudden it did not power up at all, after a few emails with qnap support and given that I was outside the amazon return window I had to send the unit to the QNAP RMA centre in Netherlands at a cost of almost £20 for shipping. I will have no NAS for at least 2-4 weeks (shipping times + qnap RMA turnover time).
I did a google search and it showed other users who experienced the no power issues not only with a TS228A ("TS228a no power") but as well with other QNAP products.
Given the limited short warranty, the fact that qnap policy does not allow you to change the product to a reliable model if you get an RMAs, the long RMA turnover time and costs, and the fact that I had 2 units in 2 months does not give me any hope on the long term reliability of the product.
More time to return.
